road bike - how do i change gear (shimano 105)

hi

appologies in advance i am a road bike newbie and have just picked up a second hand 2 year old scott speedster s30 (30 speed)

it has shimano 105 groupset & flightdeck etc

i must be missing the obvious but so far i have only managed to change one gear using the gear lever to the highest gear (whilst riding along) i am unable to change to lower gears on the rear sprockets. Also the front 3 chain rings i have not got to move at all

How do i change to lower gears?

Push the entire brake lever inwards, rather than just the shifter lever that hangs behind it.
