Batman film The Dark Knight has set a single-day box office record by taking $66.4m (£33.2m) on its opening night, distributor Warner Bros has said.

The movie, which debuted in the US on Friday, has surpassed the previous record of $59.8m (£29.9m) set last year by Spider-Man, the studio said.

This film will easily break spiderman opening weekend record!!

 Really can't wait to see this but I'm off on holiday tomorrow so I won't be seeing this until the 30th!

This site has awesome stats on just about everything

Gotta remember that most big films in USA open wed or thur so the opening 3 day gross isnt always comparing apples with apples, the opening 3 day gross could be wed-frid for one film but frid-sund for another, and if a film does open wed then its frid-sund takings are lower
Looks like Spidey3 was a frid though

eg opening weekends

DK v Spidey3 same average but obviously DK includes higher ticket prices BUT Spidey3 had less competition on its opening weekend

Compared to DK

godfather held the reign for a while..now a better movie is out..deal with it..ITS THAT GOOD....

I just can't believe it is that good. 9.7/10 from 43,000 votes? Clearly the people who want to see it the most will see it first and give it high ratings.

Don't get me wrong, I love Batman and have yearsworth of comics going back to 1960...but better than the Godfather?

Shall we change the forum avatars?

IMDB generally always has an influx of initial 'favourable' voters, they really need to improve their rating algorithm to handle this. I wouldn't give it much thought for another couple of months before a real rating can be ascertained.

Like you said, I adore batman and I cannot wait to see this film, but I think the IMDB rating is daft

Haven't seen the film but I have to assume theres a lot of people getting a tad carried away, 9.7 sounds a bit OTT and surely theres no way this is a Godfather / Shawshank

Put it this way, will the masses still rave about DK in 30 years ? Yeh right lol

Depends. Many films achieve longevity through a seminal performance by [usually]one actor. If Ledgers Joker is as good as has so far been mooted, then it really could achieve a long lasting status.

At the end of the day, some films like Shawshank, the Godfather etc.. Have brilliant scripts and fantastic performances.. however they arent everyones cup of tea.

A big budget action film can give people goosebumps, be really exciting and they will come out of the cinema with a big grin.

Its not wrong that a film can be voted highly, the godfather is a totally different type of film

so much for downloading films killing the movie industry. again and again films are still breaking box office records.

Certainly not mine.
Both of them are stupifyingly tedious.

Yet other "great" films i couldnt be without, titles such as Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, The good the bad and the ugly etc etc.

A film doesnt become less worthy of greatness because it has a fantastical figure as its central character, or indeed its whole cast are fantastical.
Films like the Matrix, Star Wars, Batman are all great films by any definition.
