Sony sets 150 million sales target for PS3

I love it how every PS3 thread ends up with somebody posting a list of games on the PS3 that aren't even out yet.

and ?, I'm talking about future game releases that I'm interested in, not old ones, anything PS3 positive these days just gets criticised, god knows why.

dreamcast came too late into the fight as have sony

You talk as if the PS3 is dead already, seriously, it's only just begun, MGS4 proved that with last months NPD figures, not even GTAIV could shift any extra consoles, but look what happened the month MGS4 was released,

wow is all I can say,

"June NPD figures

PlayStation 3 405.5k
Xbox 360 219.8k"

Nearly double the sales, and that's right after Don Mattrick @ E3 said "Xbox 360 will sell more consoles worldwide this generation than PlayStation 3", I really wouldn't be so sure.

i think this gen has already been summed up - the underdog nintendo slapped both xbox and playstation but i just feel sony have done too little and far too late

the reason why they are selling is due to their brand name and a few decent exclusives

but for him to say blu ray is their biggest selling point was the most laughable thing ever

Off topic now, why is the PS3 being compared with the dreamcast? Surely the 360 is the dreamcast? The dreamcast came out about a year before the competition much like the 360 did? Cant be based on sales as the PS3 has sold faster than the DC and the 360, pretty much at the same pace as the PS2 in its first 20 months. The only difference this time is that the 360 has kept selling well unlike the DC and the Wii is now the family console of choice, at the moment.
As for aiming at a different market its partially true, but only in the way the market has changed, the DVD playing capabilities of the PS2 was championed by Sony as the PS3 BD player is now. Also when the PS2 was released FPS and TPS games on consoles were few and far between and it wasn't rarely till Halo came out on the Xbox that the FPS genre took off. FPs and TPS games are now the top genre in console gaming, so Sony have had to shift focus to them from say the platform games/ beat em ups of the PS2 gen.

PS3 is aiming at a more maturer market, with more money who want a 5 in 1 system (games console, media centre, blu-ray player, psp hub, etc) whereas if they had just gone down the console route it would have cost a 3rd of the price and they would have sold 10 times as much

How is it aimed at a more maturer market exactly, the PS2 was £400 when released and also was one of the first DVD players (albeit not that great). I can't see a difference tbh just technology advancement.
10 times, so your suggesting everyone who had a PS2 would all have gone out and brought a PS3, don't think so. Maybe 3 times but what would prefer 30million now or the potential to put a Blu ray player into 50%(?) of homes around the world in 10years + time?

dreamcast came too late into the fight as have sony - can you not see that? sony killed off dreamcast. although microsoft and nintendo havent killed of sony they have dealt a crushing blow which is going to get wider when the next xbox is released.

Sega's own stupidity killed the DC, it arrived late like the PS3, but unlike the PS3 it was built on old tech and in the end lacked 3rd party support.

currently the 360 can do much more than the ps3 so for you to say their next one wont have an impact on them is complete bull - and to say blu ray is their biggest selling point is also retarded nobody buys films anymore especcially £20 discs - why do you think branson sold virgin stores? he was operating at a loss of over £50 million a year due to piracy

retarded? your post is completely missing the point, as I've stated we are talking about 10years here, do you really think BR films are going to be £20 in 10 years? As for the next Xbox I believe that MS will concentrate on what they do best Gaming so my view is that they will continue down that avenue. This will not in turn stop consumers buying a PS3 when their first priority will be a BR player, and gaming machine 2nd...

you scream fanboy - i own all 3 current gen consoles - all of them have their faults but the ps3 has the most

Eh, what are you talking about, never implied your a fanboy at all just pulled your post apart as it came across unconstructive and totally unfound, especially the Dreamcast comment. And good for you owning all 3 consoles.

the only bad thing i could say about the 360 is - i have had 2 die on me but both been replaced under warranty and you have to pay for their far superior online services - other than that they have been perfect

who buys a ps3 to play blu-ray and all that jazz - i download all my movies ill happily watch normal dvd quality for free - i could download the blu-ray versions but it takes too long i can just upscale the normal versions

When I think of general public I immediately think of people like my dad who grew up watching B&W tv & just about knows how to use a computer. I'm sure he'll be pleased to know that the 360 online service is great and that he can download all his films off the internet to play on his 15" monitor, thanks

i currently have 2 blu-rays (1 came with console as a package, the other was the freebie casino royale) i never went out of my way to buy them

i own 5 hd-dvd's i got them to test my hd tv mission impossible pack along with constantine and miami vice

i doubt i will buy anymore even though they are now £2.99 a disc because of piracy

so for blu ray to be their main selling point is a fantasy world they are living in - its a home media centre which plays games

And I thought we were talking about the general consumer, not you?

The whole "the PS3 has no games" argument is getting a bit lame now tbh...[continues for a million lines]
Thanks for double spacing that list. That was really, really useful, and not at all annoying to anyone who doesn't particularly care about your personal preference in games (here's a hint: that's all of us).

Antialiasing is extremely reliant on the amount of memory and the memory bandwidth available.
It's still more of a vram thing isn't it? And I thought AA was pretty much the last thing in the graphics pipeline, so by that point it's just "write AA changes to buffer, display buffer". My graphics knowledge is shocking though, so I'll take someone more knowledgeable's word on it.

the ps3 is the new dreamcast - it may be a better machine but its far too little too late
The Dreamcast was never "late" If anything, it was "too little, too soon", as it launched before the PS2, but couldn't convince enough people with what it had at the time, so most waited for Sony's console.

Were talking about over 10 years, what do you think now an improvement of a previous format (DVD) is available were just going to ignore it? OK then as your so sure tell me what will happen, are we just going to stick with DVD for the next 10 years? Digital downloads? HDDVD re-released?

Everything evolves, especially entertainment equipment, I see no reason that DVD should be any different.

Double spacing, wow, someone call the police, if it annoys you that much then I wonder how you deal with real problems in life , learn to be more tolerant, and good luck in that quest.

How the hell did you manage that typo?

Edit: I'm faster than your ninja edit :p

dam you was fast to catch that, if you could actually see how some of my posts read before I hit submit sometimes you wouldn't believe it, usually every 3rd/4th word is miss spelt, I hate labelling myself this but people tell me that I'm severely dyslexic, border-lining on asperger's syndrome, but I normally take my time to spell check everything but sometimes I get carried away and chance it and hit submit and then I read it back to myself and go into a panic and franticly try to correct it before anyone notices :o.

I appreciate the effort, normally your posts are very well constructed.

It's okay to say the PS3 has lost the battle to become a good console early in its life, but it's not okay to list games available in the future for the console.

That seems a very unfair debate, infact I'd say that looks like a debate constructed towards trying to make the PS3 look bad.

I can't see the PS3 selling more than 100m units without a redesign (slimline) and large price cut, and there's a lot of technical wizardry to cram into a box the size of say, a PSone etc.

I can see the blueray selling point being similar to the PS2 and DVD as was previously mentioned. On a side note I really wouldn't want to see MS launch a new console for another few years, especially with all the new SKUs and updates coming out.

was dvd playback really such a big thing for the ps2? i mean, everybody knew they were crap. that was the difference with the ps3 - its up there with the best dvd and bluray players.

It was to the people who just wanted a DVD player and didn't want to pay £150+ for one.

indeed. WHen i bought the PS3 DVD was nowhere near main stream like ti is now. I think i chose Toy Story as a DVD for example - which had just come out...

Its not like it was a BAD DVD player, just there are better ones around now for less money- i used it as one for years without worry.
