Star War Galaxies - worth trying?

No.

SWG was briefly the best game I ever played (actually for about a year), I lived and breathed SWG. I adored it.

They ruined it with the CU. They then shot it in the head whilst it was lying on the floor rithing, with the NGE.

Stay well clear.

I had always been under the impression this was open to the US market only. Seems I missed out on something special for a while. Shame. Still EvE has taken up way too much of the last 4 years of my life :)

Think there was 3 EU servers. Even though SWG has changed a lot I went back not so long ago, bought the trials of obi wan expansion and actualy enjoyed playing through it; I really liked the last quest where you had to go into the cave and fight that dark jedi bloke. Ofcourse its nothing like it used to be but I still think it's worth a play. Even though you can choose jedi from the start from what I saw it must be pretty depressing as with my elder jedi (gets better items for free if you unlocked before the changes) I never lost a duel against a normal jedi.

I think the issue is not so much that the NGE is crap, but if - like me - you remember what the old game was like you can't really accept how it plays now. PreCU was just so much better in every way - the skillpoint/profession system was unique and meant you weren't tied to specific "classes", you could do what you wanted to do.

In total isolation if you were coming to the game now it isn't a terrible game, although having so many Jedi running around kinda breaks the immersion. Plus, so many people left the game that most of the servers are almost totally deserted.

PreCU rules!, and Beast Master was awesome back in the day :)

i just had a cry, i miss my SWG, almost master doc and master pike, Krayte Dragons were fun to kill, just wish some-one would fetch it all back, then my PC can lose all games, and have one big SWG butten, damn good game it WAS, now its like an fps!!

Those people that never played SWG may actually enjoy the new game, however I won't endorse it to anyone as I don't want them to get any subscription fee's!!

I was a long time SWG player, moved to it from UO. Lost many hours to it.

However, while we are on the subject, is anyone following the SWGEmu?

A group are trying to recreate the original SWG (pre-nge). I haven't kept up to date with it though so I have no idea how far along they are now!

I looked a while back and they seemed to be making steady progress. I'll have to check when I get home.

Yes but we cant talk about it on here :/

Very true.

I remember being a noob in pre-cu hunting down mountain squill in the Tatooine desert with other guys. We would set up a scout camp every now and then, chat about the game and one of the guys with some musical skills played tunes to reduce our battle fatigue and the medic healed our wounds - it was great.

Jedi were rarely seen and Master Bounty Hunters were feared and respected.

After NGE hit it wasn't the same any more, the game went straight down the pan.

Perhaps the only thing I appreciated from NGE was the fact I didn't have to que up for ages in Coronet starport waiting to get buffed by a doc so I could do a quest or chase down a mark.

Memories. Squill cave hunts with all the newbie weapons... Occasionally we'd get brave, go Krayt Dragon hunting and die in a horrific fashion.

Ahhh all this talk of squills and krayts is making me yearn even more for PreCU SWG :(

As I was a Master Creature Handler I had quite a brisk trade in selling high-level baby creatures to people. The adrenalin rush of scouting out Dathomir for hours looking for an elusive baby spider, rancor or other deadly beast (the adult versions of which would kill practically instantly), using mask scent, spending ages skirting around the outside of the nest until the perfect time to tame them (which wasn't a fast process either)..... an awesome experience.

Even taming wasn't a certainty, if it failed - which was all too common on high-level beasties - you could aggro their parents which often resulted in death, meaning a long trek back to Coronet or wherever to clear your wounds and battle fatigue, etc.

Playing SWG in PreCU, whatever the path you took, really felt like you were making an investment in your character. Nowadays it's all so throwaway - you can chop and change professions without any real dedication, respec over and over without any real cost. It's been totally dumbed down for the mass market.

That was true when it was considered illegal.

However, even Sony have said that what they are doing is within the laws. They are not hacking the software, they are writing it from the ground up so its totally within copyright etc. Should be ok to speak about it now.

Maybe Zefan can let us know as I know he is a big SWG fan so hopefully he can shed some light on it!

Zefan said on page two:

Not that we're allowed to talk about, the legality of it is questionable.

So guess not :/

If you can find where it says sony have said its ok, then maybe we can finally get a thread up about it? zefan? :)

I will have a look about for it, sure I read it in a news post somewhere.

It was regarding Sony not trying to sue them over it. I shall have a google when I have 10 mins spare :D

While the illegality of creating server software for games has been called into question, it would be illegal to use it. So basically, it's illegal. Put it this way, if I reverse engineered Xbox Live and let people use it freely, do you think I would get away with it? In this case, and is the case with MMOs, it's not just a server or protocol you are using, but you are abusing a paid for service as well.

Blizzard have shut down many emulated Blizzard.net sites as well as several of the biggest WoW emulated servers.

Here is the letter one was sent:

This firm represents Vivendi Universal Gamers, Inc. and Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. (collectively, "Blizzard"). You are receiving this letter because you operate an unauthorized World of Warcraft server in violation of Blizzard's World of Warcraft Terms of Use ("TOU") and End-Uer License Agreement ("EULA"). Specifically, your activities violate Section 2(B) of Blizzard's TOU, which provides that only Blizzard and its licensees have the right to host World of Warcraft, and Section 4(B) of Blizzard's EULA, which probibits, among other things, hosting, providing or developing matchmaking services for World of Warcraft.

In addition to these contract violations, you are also in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. 1201, which prohibits the circumvention of security measures such as those used by Blizzard. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals recently confirmed that conduct such as yours constitutes a violation of the DMCA when it affirmed a grant of summary judgment in favor of Blizzard against developers and operators of emulation software. Davidson & Associates v Jung et al., 422 F.3d 630 (8th Cir. 2005)

You must immediately cease and desist from providing hosting services for World of Warcraft, and sign and certify below that you will neither offer such services, nor assist anyone else to offer such services, in the future. If you fail to comply with these demands after receipt of this letter, Blizzard is prepared to pursue appropriate legal remedies.

Sincerely,
David Tonisson

Still think it's legal?

It's also rather silly. SWG is dead. Get over it!

Why would it be illegal to use it? The free UO shards seem extremely popular and have had no legal trouble from the UO developers.

Your arguement is flawed, in that you state yourself that SWG is dead, yet you are using an extremely popular MMORPG as an example. Of course blizzard are going to get worried about free servers, because it will attract people from its paid official servers.

SWGEmu is only going to attract the people who left SWG because of the expansion so Sony aren't really going to give a damn. The original and the new SWG are two completely different games.

As for xbox live, if you could develop a free MP option without breaking copyright laws would microsoft have a leg to stand on?

My point is large companies have shut down these services. Those include Blizzard, NCSoft and even SOE. They would not have been shut down if they were not illegal.

It's not go-and-rot-in-jail illegal, but it's illegal enough not do be discussed on these forums. Just because Sony don't give a crap doesn't mean it's not illegal.

I meant SWG as we knew it is dead, not that it's got-no-people-playing dead. An emulator will never be the same as playing it back how it was. You will have idiot GM's who think they are god, constant problems, the risk that you might come online one day to find the server deleted... the list goes on. Not worth it imo. Time to move on! New SW MMO will be out soon!
