Lotus Eagle revealed

I like it, will be interesting to see what tuning options are available.

It's probably not something I would buy but it will open up the Lotus experience to a lot of people who wouldn't have considered one before.

Motor Show: Lotus Evora
Tuesday 22nd July 2008
Project Eagle's production name announced...

The new £45,000 2+2 mid-engined Lotus coupe will be called the Evora, the company has confirmed. The name was revealed this morning at the British Motor Show and replaces the 'Eagle' codename.

It is the first all-new Lotus since the Elise in 1995 will be powered by a 3.5-litre V6 producing 280bhp and has an innovative lightweight chassis. Lotus is predicting a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds and a top speed of over 170mph and hopes to take on accomplished sports cars such as the Porsche Cayman with the new car.

Lotus boss Mike Kimberley unveiled the new car at the British Motor Show this morning but would not reveal any specific performance figures. 'The A to B times are phenomenal,' he said. Lotus is calling the Evora the 'best car it has ever built' and says it is the only 'true 2+2 transverse and mid-engined sports car on the market'.

Kimberley said the car is the 'logical next step for owners of the current range' and claims the car will be both comfortable and focused. The company's engineers took it from a clean sheet to a finished design in 21 months.

They have also trademarked the "Exira" name... which will be a hotted up track focused variant of the Evora :)

looks like some kind of Japanese Pokemon type happy robot smiley thing from the front. :(

It's a whole new chassis and car. It's certainly not a derivative or rehash like the Europa was...

The press picture doing the rounds is not great. It is a bad angle with poor lighting. If you take a look at some of the better pictures the car looks far better. There is a picture from the rear quarter in Autocar that would actually get you banned here because it is pornographic :)

Not an actual derivative, but a derivative design which is, as ever, a retouch of the Elise style. It reminds me of the old vectra in that it looks like they've just gone 'Sod it, that'll do.'

That looks silly now :/ You realise that the "mouth" has been a tell-tale Lotus styling cue since the very beginning? :)

The cheeky looks on the front end of their cars have been a common feature too :)

Can't wait to see what the hotted up Exira variant looks like now :D I hope the double bubble on the rear window is much more aggressive.

Yup Eagle is the new platform... shame that they haven't released any pictures of the complete chassis yet as I'm very interested in seeing it :(

The Esprit will have a V8, possibly V10 motor if they get lucky in a partnership... but that will need quite a few modifications to the rear of the chassis to make it all fit. Especially as it will be long-mounted not transverse like the Evora.

Its a nice car but after you add all the toys its going to come to well over 50k which is just too rich for my blood.

35k with all the toys and I would really think about it but would you really want this over say a M3, RS4, 911.....?

Looks much better in the metal, the proportions are much more appealing than in pictures. I retract my previous statements in light of new evidence, it's a very sexy car.
