Upscaling DVD players?

Sorry if theres already a thread on this or it's a requently asked question.

Anyway, I just got a new TV which I'm generally very pleased with (Sharp Aquos LC37X20E).

What I wanted to ask is whether it's worth getting a 1080p upscaling DVD player as a short term fix before moving to blu-ray in 6-12 months time when (hopefully) the price of players may have dropped? A friend reckons that the improvements are very marginal over the TVs own upscaling anyway.

Any advice appreciated ;)

Nah I'm leaving it a while for Blu-Ray to settle down, not re-buying titles I already own on DVD and I can't spot any new films I'd buy anyway.

I was thinking more like around the £100 mark for an upscaling player. Something like the Sony DVPNS78 looked promising.

My quesion was whether a player like this would be noticeably better than the TVs internal upscaling?

For the £300 badbob mentioned I'd go PS3 (repeat ad nauseum).

Good DVD upscaling and the opportunity to get BD titles you want (be it nore or re-purchase).

Plus you get a free console thrown in.

I have a nice samsung one ~£60 which upscales to 1080p, does a nice job and would recommend. Obv not as good as a £300 player but is an alternative.

Got a £60 philips one for my nans lcd (720p) and it seems to do a reasonable job once its all setup right.

Probably not as good as my pc though (my opinion), that seems to be the crispest out of all the upscaled dvd's I've seen, however it does depend on the dvd that you use to test with.

i would never buy any upscaling dvd player for the same price i could get a bluray player, especially the likes of the ps3.

i had (still have) a budget upscaling LG player and it was a waste of time, no better than a standard dvd playing straight in to the display. £300 is a lot to pay to upscale dvd's when you can do it almost as well with a ps3 and play bluray, games ect. madness!

Major pain in the butt though, just doesn't work as seamless as a standard DVD P.

Yeah but there are so many options to play with the picture with FFDshow... not just upscaling, but you can do sharpening, noise reduction, sound normalization (i use this so that i don't wake people up when i watch a movie at night :o)

I actually don't use any post processing in ffdshow, just have scaling. I just prefer using the DVD P for movies. The HTPC is great for avi/divx material though. I can integrated DVD playing, I dunno just don't like it. PQ seemed good though haven't really done A/B comparisons.

Also don't have discrete commands ie eject, audio, angle subs.

I know what you mean with regards to hassle. I have a projector so using my laptop as a HTPC isn't really any extra though because the projector isn't exactly plug 'n' play. :o

I can imagine if you have your setup in your living room you just want to stick a DVD in and switch sources on your flat panel.... :)

Jack of all trades, master of none?

you could say that. but that term is usually used to describe something that is average at best at everythign it does. that doesnt describe the ps3.

the oppo is one of the best dvd players ever. the ps3 isnt. but its still very good. it's still a very good bluray player and it does a lot more besides...for the same cost as the oppo.

id rather pay £300 for a ps3 and miss out on bitstream HD audio and a few cadence tests than £300 on an upscaling oppo and £500 on a BR player that can bitstream. that extra money would buy me a lot of films to enjoy.
