Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
Iam considering buying one to replace my 8 series gts whilst its on offer at OC. Has anyone got one? Why is it so cheap compared to the others? & has anyone read any reviews on it as I cant find any! Tar

p.s. do you think its worth the extra dosh over the 4870???

if you play 24/7 crysis then go with 280 but for me it is still to expensive compered to 4870 , and 4870 is right behind it in some games even faster.

I doesn't but then the GTX can still play most games at highest res with little or no problems. So you could argue that upgrading from a GTX is pretty pointless..

Well i bought a Leadtek GTX280 at the weekend as its the cheapest one available and im really pleased with it, upgraded from a 8800gt and its definatly much faster.
Personally i think it is worth the £100 over the 4870.
If you look at all the benchmarks the 280 is faster especially on crysis and other high texture games such as age of conan where the 1gb ram seems to help.

Glad you like your card. But tbh the gains over the 4870 are not worth the £100.And most people will agree with me.Unless of cause you play crysis at a pro level and every fps counts.

You can't compare a 512MB card to a 1GB card on price really.

The 4870 1GB is £234
The GTX280 1GB is £270

SO a £36 difference, Nothing it it really, and the GTX280 is faster.

I did not compare schumi did SO get that right to start i just commented on it. and i said the mark up over a 4870 512 to the 280 1gb for the games that will make use of the 1gb(the one or two that are out) I yes me does not think its worth the money. You it seems do so each to there own.I dont game on a LCD with a big res to even think i need 1gb 1650x1080 here. Also as the 1gb 4870 have not been out long they are still priced high NIV cant bring the 280 down any lower if you ask me.

Ninja edit. They are still on pre order at pre order prices so that would mean the 512 is the only card we could have compared it to no?

LOL, what rubbish.

Cards should be compared on performance and, due to ATI's far superior texture compression algorithms, their 512MB 4870 is directly comparable with the 1GB GTX280 and doesn't appear to suffer at high resolutions to any major degree.

What a lot of crap TBH.

A 512MB card no matter if "Uber Leet Ram" does not do same as a 1024MB card period.

Some games have been shown to take over 700MB of VRAM, if you only have 512MB then obv it takes System Memory then Virtual Memory.

The only one who seems to have taken the time to post anything on it was Mr B.

Now I know why I tend to keep out of the GPU section of late.

Last time some "peep" < (being kind by wording) tried to **** me about my claim on Full AA (16x) and FPS in games at 1920's and he put up screenies of games using 8x AA with decent FPS (big difference from 16x AA IMO). ;)

Seen no point in even coming back at him as his own screenshots proved he was clueless and could not read obv.

FFS just go read the ****** benchmarks instead of having this stupid pointless argument over 1GB and 512 again, and go look at the reviews of the crap 2900 512mb Vs 1024Mb and perhaps the 4870 512mb Vs 1024mb too.

Doesn't matter that the 4870 has only got 512mb, ATi cards have much better texture comression than Nvidia, so they don't need the 1gb really, just look at the reviews, at 1920x1200 with 4xAA on etc..., the 4870 512mb beats the 1gb GTX 280 in some,

The 4870 is only about 10% slower overall and beating it in some, so no, its not worth the extra £100, so id get the 4870.

Another quality post by The Cheese ..

Please, do us all a favour and keep your promise to stay out of the GPU section :p
