Games for windows now free + dx11

Extremely extremely interesting!
Some fantastic news on the DX11 front there, easier multicore development should speed up development a lot for some game developers, simply amazing news there.

Also a unified GPGPU interface has a serious chance to help with the problems that are in folding@home now for instance, where there are 2 very different clients for AMD and Nvidia, both in terms of support and performance. The important thing is that the companies actually embrace this, and that it hopefully(this is a deal breaker) works on current DX10 hardware, that will make sure that the companies and software already using DX10 solutions on CUDA will be able to move effectively and easily.

DX11, already?

I hope you don't honestly mean that with those improvements? DX10 isn't even utilized yet so do you think that you'll be facing DX11 instantly? They have been saying late 09/early 2010 for some time now, and that's just when it's released. This is important for so much more than your possibilites in games, this has potential to really spark the GPGPU revolution.

Funny enough i was just saying to a friend yesterday who text me to tell me that he would be on his 360 in half an hour & wanted to chat to me so i had to fire up one of my windows live games just to use the live service which i thought was wrong as you don't have to load a game on the 360 that i also own to use the live service & i was saying it should be stand alone client :).

Is this like dx10 where you had to go out and buy new hardware to get it working? (new gfx card for example)

Hopefully I can slowely phase out DX10 on my PC then, keep using DX10 even on DX11 games untill I feel the need to get a DX11 card to have abit more extra features.

The trick really is to skip the first generation of hardware support. Playing DX11 games with no AA or AF on a fairly low resolution and having a hardtime keeping your FPS 20+ will not be fun.

Excellent step in the right direction for Games for Windows.

And Dx11 sounds excellent, lets hope people make use of the features this time. :)

As far as i can read from this it's mainly some API changes that will be more or less universal. The real news here is the universal DX GPGPU engine.

that's excellent news, makes want to buy some more game's now that don't need for me to pay even more money.
gear's of war and shadow run here i come.

I know one thing, it will boost sales on DX10/10.1 cards as people wont feel they want to wait for DX11 cards as much since DX10 cards will work on DX11 games proberbly in DX11 mode aswell.

Gears of War was actually already free of charge to play online. You just payed for ranked matches and online achievements pretty much...

I've always thought the reason they charge for Xbox Live is because they know they can get away with it on a console - which clearly isn't the case on the PC. Good on them for dropping the fee. Looking forward to the Live Arcade for the PC, but unless they can better inergate the 'Live' part of games into Windows or Live Messenger then I don't have overly high hopes for it. It's a joke in it's current state
