Since installing Windows XP Service Pack 3, I've got a really strange problem with how icons are displaying.

The picture below better illustrates the problem:

Not all the folders are like this though, My Music, My Pictures and all the icons on the Start menu are fine.

So far I have tried re-building the icon cache using TweakUI, manually deleting the IconCache.db file, changing the size of the icons to something much smaller and assigning new icons to folders, none of which made any difference

What is causing the icons to display like this and how can it be fixed?

Anyone? I've since tried running a few clean up tools inc a registry clean but that made no difference to the icons.

This sounds like a simple one and may not be totaly related have you gone into the folder options and had a look at the icons ive noticed theres sometimes duplicate icons possibly try changing them.

or go back onto windows update and search your system see if there are any other updates you can do. when you downloaded sp3 did you customer or express install?

im not fantastic with software but would gues if it was custome settings you chose when downloading and installing there were possibly something out its had an adverse effect. not sure tho possibly talking garbage here lol

well you've got some kinda of icon pack / tweaker on there

^they're usually more trouble than they're worth

try removing that or re-installing it, installing an SP (or any update) over any icon pack is generally a bad idea

the safe icon packs are ones like Tango Patcher and XPize, they only patch resources and not replace files (replacing files is a security/performance risk)

DavieCramb01, I already have all the latest windows update installed and SP3 was a custom install where the entire pack is downloaded.

bledd., Its the default icons for XP, I have patched uxtheme.dll to enable a custom theme but nothing else was changed. I have tried removing SP3 and the custom theme but made no difference to the way those icons look.

EDIT: The My Computer, My Documents etc were changed through Desktop > Customize menu.

ah ok

(my 'colon' button is broken, otherwise i'd do a smiley there)

try creating a new user account see if it affects that one..

i'd ask on msfn in the windows xp section

explain everything in this thread (ie, not mods done -the uxtheme one won't affect this at all), someone will know the exact exe/dll that has the problem

Alright cheers for your help :) Just registered on their forums.

Got the system running sweet after the format but sods law has a habit of kicking ya in the nuts.

you rebooted after refreshing the icon cache yes?

i'd possibly try dial-a-fix, not sure if it tries to fix things like that though, wouldn't do it any harm

Yeah I rebooted a number of times after trying each solution.

Had a look at DAF but it doesn't seem to have any options for icon/graphic related fixes.
