To be fair once he had taken of my 'special' discounts it came to £3100. Thats for 3 windows 80cm wide and 190 cm tall - nothing special, made from UPVC.

Needless to say i laughed. I said that I had a quote of £350 / window and i thought that was expensive. He turned around and said 'you dont get a 30 year warentee with them either do you?!' to which i replied: no, but i could get them replaced every 10 years and still save money.

Anybody know a good place to get quotes for double glazing in newcastle area?

i started doing that, but there are litterally hundreds of people doing it.

if each one came round and gave me the show weatherseal did that would take 1 hour per sales person. i dont have time for that.

LOL they're nearly as bad as Safestyle. Don't bother with Safestyle btw, unless you want a similar quote to that and the salesman to be in your house for hours.

You should have just kicked the guy out as soon as he came out with that ridiculous figure tbh, total waste of your time.

Best bet would be to find some recommends and go and have a look at the job they did. Smaller companies are the best bet, and with FENSA you don't need to worry about them going bust and loosing your warranty.

£350 a window sounds about right but you may be able to get them down to £250 a window if you shop around.

The smaller guys are the best ones, I even went so far as to buy my windows from wicks and got a quote for one of them to fit them for me, worked out something like £130 a window including fitting.

You ring them up and invite them.
Be very clear that if you let them through the door you don't want to listen to BS about 'discounts' and 'being in the area'.
When they come in really confuse them by -
1) Sitting either side of the salesman so he has to keep turning
2) When he gets you to help him measure the windows get the man to read the pretty books and get the woman to help with the tape measure
3) Put a variety of daily newspapers around the house such as The Sun, Daily Mail, Guardian and Observer.
4) Scatter a few cd's over the place and make sure you've got a variety including Des O'Connor (go visit your great grandad).

I wouldn't fit a window for any less than £70 which would leave £60 for the PVC window and glass lol. £250 for that size window is the cheapest you will get if they're using a decent frame. Bear in mind all glass has to be low emission under new regulations, and if the window cill is lower than 800mm the glass needs to be toughened which increases cost. Also if you choose light oak or rosewood colour its 40% more expensive than white.

Theres good and bad stories about them. The fitters are OK, its the salesmen that are the problem. Almost every customer i talk to who had a quote from Safestyle had the same story. They were on rogue traders a fair few times due to their sales technique. One old dear we worked for had safestyle in before us and they were there 8 hours, she eventually had to call her son to come and get rid of him as he wasn't going to leave until she signed.

I am also in the trade but more on the commercial side but what he said is exactly right.
If i remember correctly all double glazing companies must be Fensa registered so watch out with the little companies and one man bands or you have to get building control involved (please correct me if i am wrong).
I had Thermally broken aluminium windows made in our workshop to make things a lot cheaper (plus i hate plastic) and all the glass had to be low emission due to document 'L' regulations so i used a soft coat toughened glass.

Edit: Something else I just thought of but needs clarifaction is that all windows must comply with 'Secure by design' nowdays which is to do with security of the windows but like i said this needs clarifaction.

Not sure what 'Secure by design' is tbh. I think most plastic window profiles use a pretty universal locking system these days. The windows we use just have 2 roller bolts, but you can pay more and get shoot bolts as well. They lock in 2 positions as well to allow a bit of air to circulate while still being secure, this does away with the older trickle vents which are unsightly imo.
