Star War Galaxies - worth trying?

Still think it's legal?

It's also rather silly. SWG is dead. Get over it!

Sorry but you haven't done you homework on this one. What the SWGEmu guys were doing was building their own software from the ground up, that you point your swg client at. Sony had a hard time trying to shut them down because they're not violating any copyright.

It could be argued that the end user is doing so by pointing the SWG client at a different IP address than they're supposed to, but Sony aren't going to go after end users, especially given that it could be argued that they've sold you a product that they then changed fundamentally to something different. They're not exactly on solid legal ground themselves, despite what they may try to get you to agree to in the terms of use.

Edit - I do agree about the emulator thing though - any GM who's spent so long getting the thing up and running won't be able to resist mucking around with the game world, which is why I'd never use it.

What about the Star Wars IP? Surely Lucasarts would be funny about using that, other mods have been shut down for similar reasons (Stargate mod? IIRC)

Unless they subtley change the names and settings like they did in the PES games - could have Sterntroopers and Derth Vardor and TAI fighters and so on.

No, you're missing the point a little bit - all they've done is build their own program that interacts with the client. All the actual models, sound effects and other IP related stuff is on the client end, so they're not actually infringing on copyright. It's the end user who is in the wrong if anyone is, by fiddling his client to point at the unofficial 'server'. The server itself is completely from the ground up the authors own work.

I imagine if Sony really wanted to they could crush the whole thing, but somehow I don't think they're really bothered :)

Sony should just make one or two serves with the origional content, I'm sure theres plenty of money to be had there tbh.

Ex- EU Chimaera here

As soon as they started getting mainstream and/or charging or accepting donations for running the servers SOE/LucasArts will come down on them like a tonne of bricks for using the Star Wars I.P without a licence.

i think it is going to be interesting to see how SOE reacts when the EMU servers get up and running properly (even though it might be a couple of years yet) and they have greater populations than the actual SWG servers

although the KOTOR MMO will probably be out by then

And because the local client has the assets that means that at least in my case i have actually paid for this and feel completely justified in playing it for free at some point. Would be awesome to pick an official OcUK server :)

Farstar was my EU server. Galak Fyyar.

Talking of queueing up to get buffed. I remember the lines made infront of my master doc where people were patient, talked to each other, never pushed in.

Imagine the same buffing in WoW and it would be anarky!

The good old times where kids were not allowed online because it was charged by the minute. :)

Walking out the door of the starport into the plaza in Coronet was always an amazing experience - crammed with people and huge pets, speeders zipping around the place, just loads going on.

Last time I logged on it was deserted. That more than anything else brought home just how far the game has fallen.

Read the rest of the thread. ;)

I enjoyed playing the NGE but there were too few players for me to stay too long in the game. I don't think Jedi should have ever been in the civil war period and always thought that SOE should've brought out a Clone War game with them in.

I just hope that if the KotOR game "mmo component" will have a decent space combat version instead of JtLS.

Oh the irony

That the veteran's hated SOE for changing their game or that a new player liked some parts of the NGE (who hasn't ever played pre-CU)?

Yes I was a new player to SWG when the NGE hit. I've been after a game that had the feel of the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter games. :)

Or maybe, just maybe that I was told to read the thread when if you had actually done that you would by now know that it was not SOE who ruined the game.

If you can show me some clear evidence it was LA instigating the changes then my opinion might change. i do not believe such evidence exists though.....

On a more positive swg note , theres currently a scheme where if you are a returning vet you get to play for free for a period. Im not sure how long but a few people have said 1 month free. As its free i thought id give it ago again. The latest patches seems to have made it slightly better, with more combat animations and a lot of new missions / stuff to collect and do, most of which are group based. So although im not in favour of the NGE, ill give it a fair try again and see how it goes.
