I'm back baby!
OK, a 4 year old boy, a lame girlfriend and a 40 kilo dog (and a 4 kilo dog) aren't getting on well in my pocket rocket, so I need something bigger and better. Needs to be 6k or under, don't mind it being £1k and don't mind it £6k, I want something relatively good looking, something with a bit of poke but not with stupid insurance (ie, equal or less to the 172 Cup) and something with a large boot for the pooch/es.

What are my best options? I found an A6 TDi estate on a 52 plate last week but on viewing it found it to be an absolute dog. Holes in the bumper (half an inch across), dints everywhere... and this was front row of a forecourt of a car dealership.

I'd thought ex-cozzers, is this a viable route?

I cant help thinking how tempting a 320d is at this price point now, as long as you take some preventative maintenance steps on the plastic swirl flaps.

I've seen 2002 models with 100k for £6k or less.

It's like an Audi but it actually handles.

Obviously if you are looking at an A6 the 5 Series is the obvious choice - a considerably better car - but I'd really not fancy a 530d at less than £6k. I think it could be more trouble than its worth.

Forester XT?

I'd love the 5 series, but for that price it'd be a dog. I already have two of those :D

I was thinking more along the lines of a V70 than the Audi, and then I saw a 406 estate, but our lass nearly threw up. If it makes a lot of sense thenI'll overrule that kind of reaction, but I'd prefer something quicker.

The Bishi looks awesome, but I really don't want this car to be off the road so much, so I'd prefer something newer.

Skoda Labia vRS? Diseasal but they have some poke don't they?

Not really, its just the modern day 306 DTurbo. A regular, 130bhp diesel powered hatchback that its owners think is some sort of amazing hot hatch becuase it says vRS on the boot and the surge of power when the turbo cuts in makes them think its fast.

What about something like http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/SKODA+OCTAVIA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-17-20-50-62-111-240-4294966833-4294966834/advert.action?R=200828314196836&distance=141&postcode=de7+5bs&channel=CARS&make=SKODA&model=OCTAVIA&min_pr=4000&max_pr=6000&max_mileage=
180 BHP on tap.
Easily remapped to 200+
Big boot
Resonable fuel economy 30+ easy

I've got a wife and 2 kids and it's ideal for us (although mines the hatch). I went for the estate though for your good self with you having the dogs.

^^ What I was going to suggest.

Whilst I'm no fanboy simply because I own one, in terms of value and practicality with a drop of performance thrown in they are pretty good. For your needs even the hatch would be adequate IMO.

That's only when the missus is driving it!:p

Besides, it isn't much bigger than the 172 he already has, so not a good choice anyway.

Octavia vRS is definitely in with a shout.
