After a new 40/42" tv

Gonna have to just choose based on looks or maybe blindly throw a dart :p

Looks like they are pretty much the same so will be going on the looks myself.

81B is the newest model (based on the panny site).

I believe that panny make the pioneer panels for them anyway...
The TH42PZ81B has built in freesat/freeview tuner,
the 80B & 85B do not have built in freeview/sat tuners.
80B & 85B I cant tell the difference between.

I was lookin on the panny site and it say's the 80B/85B have a freeview tuner and the 81B has a freesat/freeview tuner.

There are also two on the back... :p
Depends how many devices you're going to have going in.

Two isn't that many. You could have this many..

1) Xbox 360
2) PS3
3) DVD Player
4) Blu-Ray player
5) Sky HD
6) PC

So really need the third HDMI input, front inputs are annoying.

The 81B has freesat whereby you hook up to a satellite and get free channels & free HD channels (don't know exactly what), and the 80/85 just have plain old freeview :)

Yeah not keen on this front facing HDMI :(

Same here, I'm not overly fond of Samsung's latest fad to use side connector panels either...

I can see the point in that they're easier to access, but lets face it... there can't be that many people who are going to be moving their PS3/BluRay/DVD/360/HTPC's around enough to be unplugging them that often

Just stick them on the back, I don't mind having to move the tv to unplug them if it looks 1,000,000 times better :)

Really considering another TV now as I really want to connect 360/PS3/PC all through HDMI (bought the cables already, VGA is too expensive it seems?)

85 has a few extra useless things, get the 80 :)

The 85B has the 24p Real Cinema feature, improved sound with Dolby Digital and BBE VivVA HD3D Sound and Intelligent Frame Creation (removes flicker from fast moving action - adding extra frames to give a smoother appearance).

Up to you how 'useless' you feel these things are. Pays yer money...

Tweaked LCD can look good, but plasma looks better. I don't think most people will spot the differenced, but for me motion is better on the LCD. For instance on a star field pan, the LCD pixels shimmered slightly, but on the plasma it stays even.

Also if into gaming, and perhaps into channel with bright logos then I'd get a LCD. Flicking through channels now and most have bright white huge boxes that stay static. ie BBC news :-/

The IFC drops motion resolution from 1080 to 950, so not really a free lunch and if you have a seperate AV Audio setup you would struggle to find reason to pay the extra?

Add extra frames to 50Hz? And at the same time do real 24p..

You not reading. The newer ones have proper 24hz, the older one doesn't. Not talking about IFC as looks like a naff feature which should be disabled.

If you have any interest in Blu-Ray this is important, and since it's a true HD panel it's obvious you'll be getting blu-ray, so the 24hz is desireable. You don't want juddery 24hz playback (ie Samsung)

I dont know if you were opening with a statement or a question, please clarify. Quit with the sentences that read like a caveman would say them.

I AM talking about IFC, as I quoted that post to bring up the point about IFC not being all that great, with some DATA to support that. You are reading only selective snippets of posts that you feel like disagreeing with as per usual.

I then went on to raise a point about these things that add extra frames, if that was such a great idea why would 24hz exist in the first place. Ie 50hz base yet some tech adds frames whilst others make a point of less frames to match how they were actually recorded.

TBh I didnt really realise there is an issue with the Pz80 24p, so im not sure what the 24p real cinema brings to the table over the cheaper PANASONIC brother, not a Samsung.

Some valid points there about the frequency features. I did read an article about it last week, will need to see if I can dig it up.

Without getting too bogged down in techno babble, the 80/85 choice is a horses for courses scenario. It depends on what you want/need and what you are prepared to pay.

The 80 is a bargin imo. But I wanted the additional features offered by the 85 - I don't as yet have a separate AV audio set up (onkyo 606 and Kef3005s coming later this year) - so it seemed to me to be worth the extra.

TBH I am unlikey to be able to qauntify half the differences in specs (in real terms) that experts feel provide reasons to choose one set over the other.

And anyway, do we really need 42, 50, 65" Lcd/plasma displays to sit and watch telly on, all day? Have you seen the weather outside.. ;)
