As a pro evo man for many years, this year I got FIFA as well. Both different types of game, with Pro Evo having better player control and first touch, and FIFA the graphics and the "big match" feel. Euro 2008 FIFA was the clincher for me as it had much improved player control etc and leaves Pro Evo behind.

For the first time since 1999 I'm looking forward to a FIFA game over a Pro Evo one

Edit:

Only real change I think it needs, and this goes for all football games, separate buttons for heading and volleying.

Agree with this - too often players head the ball instead of volleying and vica versa

Yep, I'd like a lot more stadiums, easier free kicks, more people around the stadium ie subs doing warm ups and perhaps a better manager system, one seasons i picked up about £60 millions worth of players on free transfers, oh and easier heading and the ability for some crazy shots to go in, ie from half way line

Free kicks are easier than penalties to score in 08! I hate how keepers can just run to one side and save it which Euro 2008 addressed, but then it's too easy to score pens in Euro due to how easy it is t hit it top corner. The power bar should be more erratic depending on the pressure of the penalty.

Free kicks are too easy, especially about 30 yards out, most have mastered it.

Yep. The amount of times I've done a lobbed ball through and the bloody attacker will head it rather than volley! Bring back double tap for volley's!

just need to be able to shoot at goal with more power behind the ball, can't wait for this, stick me down for whatever league is starting up for it

Sorry, guys for it being a little later than promised but I just got off the phone with Michael and scribbling down notes as fast as he could talk. But it's worth the wait. First, they switched Next-Gen to today. He was able to talk to David Rutter for 15 minutes and was able to cover a lot of our questions. So here's some good info that we haven't seen elsewhere.

Red Cards are fixed. They totally re-wrote the AI for the refs and now tackles from behind can result in direct reds. This is all being driven by the new trapping system. Michael was told that you will definitely see more cards in general. Next, let's talk cameras. All cameras are available in all modes and are adjustable. Stadiums look better than ever and now have away fans and also there were supporters with scarves. But I must bring up the 15 new stadiums. They are all generic. They have a style similar to regional stadia, but aren't real. There is a knockoff of White Hart Lane. There are generic Italian, Mexican, African and Spanish. Can't remember the rest. Sorry.....

Next some more gameplay stuff.Ball physics are vastly improved and skill moves are responsive and easy to pull off. The new team tactics have given the teams a very realistic feel and they play in a realistic style to their counterparts. Michael played as Arsenal v Tottenham and said that the Spurs were real aggresive. He then played a Serie A match and it was very laid back in the Italian style. He asked how often the teams change tactics and was told continually in response to your style and game situation. Now, in case you haven't read it yet, there are three gameplay speeds. Normal which is Euro, slow which is 08 and fast which is slightly faster than Euro. Michael also brought up how the free kicks have been changed where you can do two-man kicks with layoffs. Now you can also charge from the wall this year. But there are no quick-kicks. David Rutter said they wanted to do it but couldn't this year. So the game will still halt and reset postions.

Okay, big stuff here. The whole backline D AI was re-written. Last year only one man at a time could approach in the box. Now up to five can. So no more cutbacks and running across the box for chippies. But it will vary based on tactics. He said he talked to a guy from EA for 20 minutes just about this alone. Now switching has been improved so we shouldn't have that helpless feeling where the CPU won't let you have control of a guy who can break up a play. Dummy passes are in. Michael defined that and was told yes, it's in. The fatigue system has been totally redone. You'll see a major difference near half. You'll get some energy back at halftime, but not all. And late in the match it'll show. Goalies can't get hurt. But they can come up late in matches in support based on their attributes. You don't control it.

Now before this sounds too good to be true, he's the bad stuff. Manager Mode got next to no love. This year was all about gameplay. They said they know things need work and it's on the agenda for 10. And one of the big problems they haven't been able to figure out is how to manage fatigue over the season. So the CPU is probably gonna be exausted by match 5 again. But here's a good note. There is now a premium in how you substitute, The game will let injuries occur if you subs all three guys out. So you really have to have some strategy for subbing. Now here's a good counter balance: injured players will now go off the pitch and be able to re-enter the match. Michael said you see them oon the sidelines laying around in pain, and then when ready the ref waves them back on. Cool little touch.

Sliders make a very visible effect on matches. They actually had these in mind way back last November but had to wait for this title to get them in. Michael gonna list all the sliders for Team Tactics later. Bu they are in some of the interviews out there. He likes them and say they work well. Now he hasnt' gotten to "Be a Pro" stuff yet. There are going to be playing all night so there will be some more questions asked and more things explored. But I've gotta drop a few loose nuggets I still have on my notes. Headers are totally ripped out and redone. They went back and looked at older games and captured all new animations to bring the feel of those games back. Back to cards: there are delayed cards. You can play the advantage and go score and then the ref will show the card.

Now this was a 6 week-old build. There have been many improvements since. But they couldn't show the newest build because it had the super-secret online stuff. If my stuff sounds all over the place and not very concise, it's because Michael was so excited about the game it was just one "man this game is great" moment after another. I just wanted you guys to have info as quick as possible, as he'll be playing the game until late in the night their time. He'll fill in anty blanks I left and answer more direct questions probaly weither late tonight or tomorrow. But all in all, the game sounds really, really good form Michael. That's it for now.

Sounds great disappointing nothing been done to manager mode though.

I'm hoping you can customize the formation and tactics a lot more as in FIFA08 you can't do much at all. Also be a pro 10v10 online!

Ye you can customize tatics with sliders now loads of different combinations and you can assign them in game to adjust on fly. :)

I want saveable formations for online play.

Shame there's no quick free kicks like PES.

Is there savable replays online does naybody know yet??

Is there going to be any difference between the XBOX and PC version ? I will get both because I've just invested in a Dell XPS M1530 lappy, that way if the GF moans that I'm using the TV to much on the XBOX I can always use the laptop! win win

Graphics are now up to scratch on PC version but i think gameplay although tweaked a lot is not same as Next gen version.

But it has new mouse and keybaord controls etc what makes it abit like PES on Wii so i have seen from FSB blog.

The PC version of FIFA 09 has undergone a massive overhaul this season and is looking a real treat with the new mouse and keyboard controls that remind us of a certain football game on the Wii, be it with much much more accurate controls. The focus... a much more innovative control scheme.

And Custom formations etc is all available online. :)

FIFA certainly looks like it could be fantastic this year.

It's a shame that Manager mode won't get much of an overhaul as there is bucket loads of potential in that mode, and it's the one that I use more than any other.

No quick freekicks is a little annoying, but on the flip side it's a feature that FIFA has never had... so it's not that bad.

I hope they get the card system right this year, as it really hasn't been right in 07, 08 or EURO 2008... delayed cards is a wonderful feature as it adds to the realism... but I just hope it's accurate more than anything.

Injured players after using all your subs is brilliant news, it's a simply thing but it's actually something that's always bugged me about FIFA :o

Liking the idea of players leaving the field for treatment and then coming back on too, that's something PES did quite well IIRC?

It sounds like they've certainly taken a long hard look at the franchise and really looked at what it's been lacking over the last few years, it's looking very good :)

I try not to judge how good or bad football games are from marketing speak. Usually it's all rubbish and you find that it plays pretty much the same with a few cool new tweaks and modes.

I'm glad they are working on the responsiveness of the players as it was my main issue with FIFA 08. FIFA 09 seems to be on the ball but if PES has a solid online and plays like the older games I can see myself buying both.

Can't wait for both the demos :)

I hope they add red cards, they seem to just have yellows in 08. I must have played about 500 games and the A.I. has never got a red card.

Red cards are in 08, it's just incredibly hard to get a straight Red... Two Yellows = One Red happens a lot easier (obviously).

I've had possibly... 3 or 4... definitely not in double figures anyway!

They happen more often in EURO 2008, played last night England vs. Croatia and the last defender hacked me down and was given a straight red card.

It's an odd request, but I'd like to see the AI foul more... the CPU makes way too many clean challenges for my liking and often has a tendency NOT to dive in to challenges when you know a real player would.

That said, the AI made a phenominal last ditch challenge when I was one on one with the keeper in the same match... sliding in to block my shot which deflected over the keeper, smacked the bar and went out for a corner.

It always brings a smile to my face when I see the AI actually perform something realistic like that in a footy game.

FIFA has brought the "Ooooh!" and the "AAARRGH!" factors, and the adrenaline you feel back to footy games in recent years :)
