Great Britain?

I'm quite patriotic. I was thinking about joining the RAF a few years ago, have the Union Jack as my desktop wallpaper, donate to the poppy appeals, etc. :)

On the jet engine front I think the previous poster should google SIR FRANK WHITTLE

(A bit long winded but we can't have anyone else claiming the jet engine invention can we!!)

a number of sources designate Sir Frank Whittle as the 'co-inventor' of the jet engine (with Hans von Ohain) rather than the sole inventor. This is not correct.

Facts :

The turbo jet was patented in 1930.
The patent details entered the public domain 1931.
The German Embassy in London despatched copies of the patent to Germany 1932.
Copies of the patent to Goettingen, Heinkel, Junkers, Brunswick and elsewhere.
Von Ohain a student at Goettingen (Aerodynamic Research Division) 1934/5.
Von Ohain begins to study the possible application of the internal combustion jet to aeronautics in 1934.
Herbert Wagner at Junkers and Ohain at Heinkel begins turbo jet development April 1936.
The 'popular' belief that von Ohain invented the turbo jet has been generated in America and is unsound history.

Von Ohain invented a unique form of internal combustion turbine. Heinkel employed him to develop this for jet propulsion. After five years, the project was abandonned and Ohain was put to work on turbo jets designed by other engineers.

Von Ohain only claimed to have 'invented' the turbo jet about 25 years after the end of World War II when Wagner et al were safely out of the way. He may have been encouraged in this by his fellow German-Americans and also by Americans who are uncomfortable with the impact of the British invention.

imo patriotism is the product of good P.R. I mean what is it? Feelings of pride/loyalty to your country. When people say country, they don't mean the physical aspect, most of the time they are talking about intangibles, a set of ideals somehow linked to a v.large piece of rock.

People feel proud of what their particular piece of rock stands for, which is strange as i feel that no country has anything to be proud of. Seriously, should we be proud that ONLY 3% of our population is dying because they can't afford to eat, proud that we don't kill each other as often as other places? Our standards are way too fu%%ing low!

To me geography should have nothing to do with pride. It's 2008 for fu**s sake and children are dying all over the world for no reason other than greed, we are killing each other because we think differently about things and a persons colour/class/gender is still somehow relevant. Its okay tho because my rock killed some Nazi's once!

Sorry if that was random and poorly written. But im drunk, my friend has just been beaten up and put in a hospital and i needed to vent

My only dislike is the lack of pride and patriotism people have in our country. Its very sad.

Great Britain is pretty awesome.

The reason I'm proud of living here isn't because I think I own it or anything, it's more that living here and growing up with the culture around me has moulded me in to the person I am today.

:Edit: For the record, I'm a bit of a patriot. However I do also feel similar feelings towards other countries, just not so strongly.

I feel very very proud of our history it’s amazing what we have achieved as a small island. Couldn’t think of a better place to live.

If you've ever spent any time living abroad you really start to realise the things we take for granted in the UK, yes it has it's problems but as countries go it's far better than a large proportion of the rest. There's no place like home!
