Domain Transfer Involving 123 Reg

Okay, my friend has a site and for various reasons that's been transfered over to me.

The current domain name is registered with 123 reg and the hosting is with Zen.

I do have my own hosting with Vidahost and everything's fine and not a problem, but I've never been involved in a domain transfer and want it to go smoothly - i.e no loss of email or minimal loss in terms of time.

What's the general process for this?

I'm wanting to transfer the domain over to Vidahost and setup a hosting account there. That should go smoothly and just need to make sure the nameservers are Vidahost.

Or I may keep the domain with 123 reg and do an internal transfer to my own account and then setup hosting with vidahost and just setup name servers. If I did it that way, would I have to fiddle with MX records or anythings like that?

Obviously at moment my friend has about 6 email accounts with the domain name on the current host - zen. Now if the domain is transferd and the hosting is setup elsewhere will that man I have to go into Cpanel and re create all the email account names? Will there be any loss of email (e.g any email that is not downloaded by the user in outlook is stored on the servers, and if am changing servers etc etc I presume there could be a loss of email if user hasn't downloaded...hope that sounds right'

Anyway, any comments will be nice, thank you

Would think an internal transfer then just change the DNS settings would be the best bet, personally i like to keep domain names seperate from the hosts just incase i ever have issues with them.

Creating an account with your host before and setting (email usernames/passwords) and all other settings exactly the same as previous host would be best if possible, then once DNS changes are made everything should be ok you can then change passwords later if needed.

Sure there is an option in Cpanel to migrate accounts accross servers, but i think thats at a higher level than you will have access to.

Thanks, if I used the backup option of Cpanel on the hosting, and did a whole back up...then on the new host's cpanel i can just restore it and that should have all the email data etc etc.

Although I am slightly confused.

On the who is the nameservers are pointed at 123 reg, but the server data is with Zen.

Is it right to think the domain is registered with Zen but the host is 123 reg?

No, it means 123reg is the registrar and he's probably configured A records pointing to Zen. There may also be specific MX records pointing to Zen, or he could have configured separate email aliases to forward elsewhere. Without being able to see the DNS record it's difficult to say.

No idea if a backup from cPanel will be transferable between providers.

You could just ask Vidahost if they can/will transfer the cpanel from Zen. As Keo said there is an option to migrate accounts from other servers in cPanel but it will certainly only be accessible to your host if your account is just a Shared Hosting account.
