Gym Membership Advice

Hi,

Basically I entered a gym contract with the local gym on 1st February. I am going to university, and when I entered the membership I was told that I could cancel whenever I wanted. However I am trying to cancel it and have been told I entered a 12 month contract, I told them the manager said I could leave when I wanted as he understood my situation.

I was also under the impression that I cannot enter a 12 month contract due to my age (I am 17). I have thought that if they do not let me cancel (I am expecting a phone call form the manager on Tuesday) I am simply just going to cancel the direct debit and right a letter informing them. I know i'm stupid for signing a 12 month contract, but what would you do?

do you have anything on the contract that says you can cancel at any time? if not then you are stuffed.

cancel the DD and in a few months expect a CCJ to be lodged against you for defaulting on payments.

Speak very nicely to the manager, appeal to the nicer side of him/her.

Use the gym to squat. Then go threaten the manager.

They can, under 18's are not legally bound to almost all contracts. Certainly not one such as this anyway.
