new gas supply - not billed for 4 years!

i used to work for a company that EOn took over, Eon took over loads of smaller companies, and they said they've got about 12000 'phantom' accounts, that they have no record of

you're one of the lucky ones, they can't charge you a penny without an initial reading mate ;)

Why does everyone say "go to ofgem" or "go to energywatch"? You only do this if there is a dispute - and only after you have attempted to rectify matters with the supplier.

Talk about premature.....

If your getting it for free and can only ever be liable for the last 12 months then why contact them at all? If they keep pumping gas into your house and can't be bothered to charge you for it, it's their own fault. It's not as if they aren't profiteering with a revenue of over 70 billion.

UPDATE

All resolved now without going to energy watch

my supplier was happy to follow the billing code and charge me for 1 years useage. Also after negotiation they have applied the rates which applied at each of the 4 previous quarters and I also got the dual fuel discount that I was entiltled too.

worth mentioning energy watch have a good site where you can sign up and ask questions which in my case were replied too the following day.

many thanks for the advice from the experts on here (especially biohazzard) :)

You were lucky and really should have paid for four years of supply you had. Knowingly not paying for a bill for four years should yield a fine regardless to whether you were billed or not.

I ensure my bills are paid, people like you put up prices for all of us. Thanks.

That's pretty naive. These companies make huge profits, they are not putting up prices in response to low profits, merely profiteering. If you think people not paying their bills puts up prices then your sorely mistaken.

I think he has made it pretty clear that he would have paid them if he had received the bills! These companies make huge amounts of profit... I somehow doubt that a few people cause the increase in prices! I would have done the same thing if I had not received the bills - kept the money in a savings account in case they came knocking! So, thanks to you for your ridiculous and useless post!

i think its plainly obvious he hoped to get away without paying otherwise he would have contacted the supplier and made sure he was paying

i agree though that to say this causes prices rises is a bit naive

Why should he go to all the effort of making sure that a company that is providing him a service (of which they should be aware of) does not bother billing him? Maybe a loss of 3 years of earnings from one customer may force them to get their act together!

all the effort, what like making a phone call? heh

because that would be the honest thing to do, surely?

By looking at the other comments in this thread, other people have tried to do what you say and it has not worked... so most likely one phone call would not have done the trick!

So if you were in the same position as OP then you would have gone straight to your gas company demanding that you got billed?

Unfortunatly you are indeed only liable for the last 12 months, (I work for EDF Energy and used to deal with the Ofgem/Energywatch cases) I love the way customers allways don't think that they are stealing Gas or Electricity because they haven't received a bill. Do you walk out of the shop with a TV in your arms and if no one sees you it is their fault so you shouldn't pay?

You are lucky for the recent changes.

Sorry if I sound a bit preachy but I spent 5 years hearing that line from customers

Why the hell should he have to chase the supplier for a bill? If I sold someone something but let them take it out of the shop and invoiced them 4 years later it would be my own stupid fault for not invoicing them sooner.

were not talking about other people though

the op waited 4 years for a bill, your seriously telling me he wasnt sitting ther rubbing his hands together hoping one would never come? intention of paying it my bum :p

i would have probably left it a few months at most then enquired about it, is it hard for you to believe some people are quitehonest?

Its funny this thread, the Op wanted advice. Instead he got opinions about his character and actions...

Strange that we want to judge people all the time.
