A letter arrived with our post this morning, but it was made out to someone else. Without hesitation my girlfriend opens it just to be nosey.

Personally i woulda said "not at this address" or similar on it, then posted it back in the post box at the top of our street.

Sometimes she does things that really annoy me!

Do you open them when this happens or is there a better way to go about it.

I just write Wrong Address or something to that effect on it and repost it. It's only ever happened to me twice though.

Exactly. this is what i would have done had she not done this.

no wonder i argue with my lass a lot.

I get about 20 letters a week which are not addressed to me. For a while I would write in massive letters "NOT AT THIS ADDRESS" on the front and fire them back in the post box. It was a waste of time though as they came straight back to me :/

I just throw them in the bin now.

we used to have that problem, but we just put return to sender and didn't have one bounce.

After about three years of living here they stopped. Haven't had any since then.

It's illegal? I didn't think it was.

Oh well, I gave the previous tenants plenty of notice. I have even forwarded a letter to them through my letting agent, asking them to sort it out but nothing has happened and this has been going on since October.

I get mail to the previous owners of this house all the time. But its never anything personal, just advertising and subsciptions to boring free magazines.

I used to put it in the post box with the previous owners new address written on. Now I just throw it all in the bin, it’s just junk mail anyway.

I get 20 or 30 a week to, about five times the number that are actually addressed to me. Most appear to be junk mail. They are addressed to at leasy 10 different people.

I just ignore them, and throw them away.

if the address is close to you then id just pop it through their mail box. happens to me a lot. if its far away or completely wrong just give it back to postman if you see him or take it to post office.

we used to get letters from barclays for someone else and we kept returning to sender with "not known at this address" but they kept coming back

so one day we opened the letter wrote all across the letter in red marker "not known at this address" put it back in the envelope with return to sender...and we havnt had one since.

.

I don't think it is either.
From memory the law states it's illegal to interfere with mail in the Queens (or Kings depending on current monarch) Post, but once it arrives at the address on the front it's down to how you want to deal with it.
IIRC the law is intended to make sure it arrives at the address without interference or undue delay.

If we get a letter dropped through our door with a slight address mistake we'll normally pop it round if it's the same street.
If we get it through the door with a name we don't recognise we'll either pop it back into the post with "not at this address" or file it under "R" for recycling (if it's obvious junk mail).

I had a parcel that wasnt supposed to be sent to my address, and i opend it :) turned out to be an 8GB USB flash drive :)
