As the title says I've just picked up a new 1TB Drive and want to shift my vista install to the new drive.

My current 500Gb drive is partitioned as follows -

Partition 1 - D - XP - 30Gb (I want to delete this as I've not used XP in months)
Partition 2 - F - Data - 400Gb (This will also be moved eventually)
Partition 3 - C - Vista - 30Gb (this is too small so I want to enlarge this)

I've tried to ghost my Vista install from Partition 3 of my current drive to the first 60Gb partition of my new drive which results in NTLDR missing error, I've fixed this using the Vista boot repair together with other boot problems it detected. I've reached the point where windows will boot but it gets to the end of the scrolling bar part of the boot sequence and just as the log-in screen would appear it crashes and re-boots.

My last resort would be a clean install of Vista but this takes hours to complete :(

Any ideas on where I'm going wrong?

Cheers!

That is really my last option as it seems somewhat of a waste given my current install of Vista has been rock solid.

I might end up going down that route though :(

can you boot into safe mode ?

see if you can , then restart...sometimes safemode picks things up and corrects it for the normal boot

nuts I just formatted the drive and was about to start again from scratch lol I'll get back to where I was and try that.

Cheers :D

quite, was nice and easy back then.

I was just looking at windows easy transfer as a means of shifting all my application settings and documents over if I go down the route of a fresh install. Is this a viable option?

What tool are you using to 'ghost'?

Some light reading --> http://www.multibooters.co.uk/cloning.html

Thanks will check that out :D

vista doesn't take 'hours' to install

25-30 mins max

just do it now before wasting more time :)

Vista doesn't but to get all the apps on and setting in place isn't a 5 minute job.

Lol. Acronis Trueimage. Free trial. Did me when shifting mine similar to yours.

I've tried true image but I cant find an option to clone a single partition, it just seems to want to copy the whole drive?

OK, I was looking in the clone section on page 89. That section seems to relate to backing up a drive to a backup file rather than cloning it to a new drive, I'm guessing I may be able to make the backup file and then restore it to a new partition on my new drive though?
