Lending money - what would you do?

Hypothetical dilemma - You have some money saved and have just put it into a high interest account (couple of thousand). The problem is that a close family member is really in need of help. Would you keep the money where it is or would you help out the family member?

Depends on what they have got into trouble with... I had the same situation a while ago and ended up lending my brother half of what he needed. I'm getting the money back as well which is nice, seeing as he's never paid anything back in his life!

If you aren't sure they will pay back, don't do it. Friends and family are the worst people to lend money to and it can cause a lot of bad feeling when they take you for granted.

Depends do you actually want the money back?

I would say no unless it was very serious and they wrote and signed they owed it, after all family is family but money is how most family arguments/years of ignoring start.

Pretty bad. Could be damaging to health.

Also it is very close family.

Edit : #YEs!

lendign money is a bad idea it just makes no end of problems let them get a bank loan and pretend your skint UNLESS its immediate family ie brother sister mam dad

Depends. Some family should never be lent money as you'll never see it again!

Who cares, it's just money.

You're effectively telling me that you can put a price on your family. Don't be an fool, it's called 'family' for a reason. You should never give money expecting it be paid back, but that doesn't mean you should give it to those who are unappreciative or abusive.

Maybe I just have a different interpretation of what 'family' actually means. People are too materialistic these days, it's disgusting.

Then lending them the cash is the only option.

Should be good for some wicked Karma too. ;)

You've redeemed yourself :p

It is immediate.

You would have to be a pretty selfish tool if you was to decide that gaining a few £100 quid in interest over the year is more important then helping a Close Family Member who has a immediate problem which could damage there health....

you know family are people too? I got a cousin who stole my grandfathers clothes. not has the infinite money pockets you have and people take advantage a lot. There's a limit and you dont seem to realise this.

As a rule of thumb, I don't lend money.

Partly as someone I've lost contact with owes me £525 - outstanding now for 7yrs+.
Someone else owes me £300 - outstanding for 2 yrs.
Someone else owes me £1000 - outstanding for a yr.
