Hi,

In October i'm hoping to go over to America (Chicago to be exact) to visit a friend. I want to hire a car while i'm out there - however I'm after something a bit special, hopefully a Mustang, or similar.

I know a few people who've done this - how did you go about this, did you use a specialist company? How much did it roughly cost? Are there any restrictions? I'm 22 with 4 year's driving experience.

Thanks :)

a lot of the ordinary companies do Mustangs. Hertz, Budget and Doller definately do.

I had a mustang from Doller in Phoenix it cost about $500 with taxes for a week.

One trick I was told by a mate (never tried this myself) is to hire the cheapest ford focus in the list. It is never in stock, the salesman will try to get you to upgrade (claiming safety, etc), but as it is not in stock if you stick to your guns you get a free upgrade.

OK, nothing special as you asked, but it is a cheaper way of doing the hiring

Do you think Americans coming over here go 'I wanna rent me something special, you know, something like a Ford Fiesta' in the same way we all seem to crave Mustangs? :D

It is right until you get stuck with a 1.6 auto focus for a week :D

Off Topic - I remember my uncle had visitors over from Newark NJ - he took them for a drive in his classic 4.2L Daimler Sovereign and they thought that was small

I was looking into this for November/December time, but I was looking at Minneapolis, the best car I could have rented was a Camero...my friend that would be going with me pointed out that they are normally quite deep in snow, so that could be 'interesting' to drive in it. :(

you can usually blag a free upgrade anyway, but if that fails the price difference isn't that much more for an upgrade in North America, unlike over here.

my parents were in canada last month and got upgraded from some rubbish american saloon to a brand new S40 2.4i for only £20 more for the week..
