"4870x2 reviews thread"

Think you'll need a seriously good/fast CPU to get the best outta that setup, not to mention a mega PSU!

Time for companies to redo there Graphic Card Power Supplies again! (just with a better and quieter thermal solution).

Am waiting for final retail card but its not looking good for my 620W PSU with an already overclocked Q6600 @ 3.72, will be interesting to see what the likes of Anandtech, Guru3d and Firingsquad recommend with PSU's with final release card but I'm not convinced it'll be the card for my rig, Am leaning towards the 4870 or maybe 1Gb 4870

I haven't seen any slowdowns with the 512mb 4870 so far at 1920 x 1200, but I am keen to see what the 1gb version can do for sure.

Thought we might have seen some 4870 1gig info by now. I dont want to spend another £60-£100 on top of the cost of a 4870x2 for a PSU either, so kind of hoping the single core 1gig card will be the sweet spot @1920x1200.

From Guru3d Review

"Board-partners are free in their choices, you'll see X2 based cards with 4850 configurations, 4870 configurations, gDDR3, gDDR5, 1 GB, 2GB maybe even 4 GB memory."

 :D

That guru3d review did say don't take the power figures that seriously yet as it wasn't final release board so no need for people to panic over psu requirements just yet :).

Exactly,....my HX620 copes with a mild over clocked CPU (Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz) and a 3870 X2 I am sure the 4800 X2 will consume slightly less than the previous gen X2 so you should be ok.

I really think the 2 gig ddr5 versions are gonna be thin on the ground when it launches. Prolly be a frenzy for them when launch day comes. And if they are we all know what that means price hiking up the wazoo...doubt it would make any difference if amd shipped a million of these at launch it would still happen. =/

I wish ATi / nVidia would come out with a Multi-GPU solution that doesn't need profiles, and works in everything.

What your asking then is for them todo something that still cant be done even on multi core CPU`s & that is make every game & software use multi thread no matter how it is programmed & it would be MS job to make profiles in the OS to make non multi threaded software multi threaded.

Thats why they have interns and placement students :)

Whats with the grid top res performance? on the anandtech review.

Its like nearly 3 times faster than 4870 crossfire. and why is one 4870 better than crossfire 4870's hmm, probably mixed up...still why is 4870x2 suddenly so much faster. as its 2 times faster than any other ATi alternative.

What I've noticed is that in general if a 'sample' comes from ATI take it as a sample, but if it comes from a partner then that is pretty much the board your gonna get (i.e. unlikely to change anything as they are probably already in the boxes and shipping). So thankfully this time guru3d are prob right and the power issues will be sorted before shipping :) (I hope :D)

Hmm you know what would make my wallet happy if there was actually some amazing new game out to take advantage of the 4870X2 !

I need BF3/RA3/SC2/DNF/ even COD expansion or COD3 or Crysis warhammer

Need my fix lol, but am considering since theres sod all new or decent games lately maybe a 4850 is ok for now.

Not everyone will be able to afford an upgrade like 4870x2. So they arent going to produce a game like that for a while because it wouldnt be profitable to target a smaller audience.

Anyone know when NDA is lifted for proper reviews of final retail 4870X2 cards ? Seem to remember 13th/14th Aug but is that release date or NDA for reviews ?

I ams ure i have read 14th is the release date for X2 so i would expect NDA to finsh day before giving enough time to get some info out there for people that like to buy in an educated way.

I don't think xfire on the 4870's is working with GRID on that review. Hence the slightly worse performance than a single 4870.
