Big company crappy laptop

I would, just to cover his bacon.

Explain that you are knowledgable about hardware, if they have their own IT division they will probably ask him to send it back to them.

I'll get him to ask then, he's in a senior position anyway so I doubt it will be a problem. Other than the RAM it's a nice laptop, crazy that it only has one gig in a modern system.

4 months ago I started travelling more for work, and therefore requested a laptop. Being pretty much at the bottom of the corporate ladder I expected a second hand low spec, but I got given a brand spanking new Dell Lattitude D630, widescreen and everything!

PK!

I'd say quite the opposite, I had a precision mobile workstation from Dell last year and it was fairly rubbish compared to my new HP one. Each to their own I guess...

From personal experience I would agree with bigredshark, the business oriented HP laptops tend to feel much more solid that the equivalent dell's

There is another point on you original question about adding an additional drive for more storage space. How would the content of that drive be backed up. Adding more storage capacity may well increase the amount of data he has "at risk". If he's running out of space then maybe he should archive some of the files he doesn't need instant access to on the laptop off onto a file server at work where they can be backed up.

Yes, you lied and are possibly allowing your GF to get fired.

I'm doing laptop builds at the moment and you would not believe how long it takes to get one in a state that I'm happy with. I'd be very angry if someone decided to undo all of that.

Indeed, I'm the same. Altiris is a god send though! Takes ages to script it to perfection but at least once its done rolling out is bliss :D

Do you not use RIS? i find this the easiest way to install preset images.

Altiris = RIS pretty much. I just use what we have at work and since Altiris is what was being used (all HP thin clients come with an Altiris client license hence probably why its in use) I just picked up the reigns when my boss told me to learn it.

anybody else on the other end of this, i have to send out some really crap laptops to our sales reps because there is no budget for new ones :(

Indeed. As someone who works in IT, I would go nuts if anyone did that with our builds. We think carefully about what goes on them and what security is also in place.

Seriously, buy your own god damn laptop and give the support guys a break.

Totally agree. Lately I've been setting up loads of laptops for people within work, installing XP with our software added in.

If someone decided to to reinstall Windows and they had a fault I'd just turn round to them and tell them to give me the laptop and tell them to take a hike as they obviously can't be trusted with it so don't need it.

They can't reinstall our stuff as it's all done via the network and is passworded. :)

EDIT: But then we give our people any Dell they want, their department pays for it so it's of no bother to us IT guys. :D

Since I gave up worrying about my laptop and mobile phone about 10 years ago they seem to have got better and better each year ;)

We make users sign a form before laptops are issued out which state that users must not in anyway tamper with the hardward, install any unauthorised hardware including third party software which the IT department does not approve.

We do exactly the same, excellent way to stop people installing crap

Had 25 brand new laptops delivered 3 weeks ago, all installed, imaged and ready to go and now everyone who takes it out has to sign a form with there name, signature, username on it including the laptops serial number that they take

They take a copy of the agreement and we take a copy, i even specifically added AOL to the list of items not allowed even after saying not to install your own software

To the OP, have a bit of consideration for the people who have to deal with these complaints every day, we don't give you the crap because we hate you, we give you the crap because there's simply not enough money to buy everyone something new EVERY time you ask for it

EDIT: well actually, some people we DO give the crap too and that is because there abusive and we hate them :D personally i reserve the nicer things for the people who are nice to us and the people i beleave will be most competent in using it (EG new laptop to intelligent staff, old laptop to the dumbass thats just going to drop it getting out of there car)

We do similar, but to be honest the most people with none standard hardware, software and builds are the IS department. Well you have to have some benefits, don't you. All purely for testing, honestly :)

Having said that I make sure I have the approved Anti-Virus S/W and all Apps are legal copies for which we have licenses.

The OP is one of the reasons IT Departments have so many issues with users:

It's not your laptop - it is property of work
It is not for you to watch DVDs on or install wow on - it is for doing your job
If work give you a laptop be bloody greatful!

At my previous employers I set policies in place so users had to sign a consent forms and security policies to prevent any software installs as well as never checking for local dogs as that was not allowed - if they had an issue the laptop was nuked back to the standard image

The op deserves to be sacked or shot or dumped! New users or upgrade users at my new employer get Dell Optiplex desktops and nice Latitude laptops so they don't feel the need to act like spoiled children. I also find Dell to be better than HP

if your that worried about the users installing junk on their laptops, why dont you just give them Power User rights?

I'd find it funny if your girlfriend's employer used network access control and she found that the next time she plugged her laptop into the corporate network it got chucked into a quarantine vlan... she'd have some explaining to do to her IT dept, and you'd have even more explaining to do to her.
