What's the general consensus with this, I'm not old enough to have suffered punishment in school but I was smacked by my parents when I did wrong.

Do you think re-introducing this in schools would improve the behaviour or just make things worse (retaliation)?

1st in epic thread

It's too easyily open to abuse, I'm not for it - there are better ways to solve the issues.

Parents should be allowed to smack their kids i dont think anyone can argue against that, the problem is obviously how to stop child abuse and promote childrens rights if you dont have any sort of legislation regarding it in place. You cant have it both ways really.

Personally I say parents yes, teachers no. Let the parents handle it when the kid gets home.

IMO the problem today is that parents don't generally give a monkey's what their kid gets up to.

I'd say this country needs to go more old school to be honest.

I wouldn't say the way forward is with capital/coporal punishment, but in terms of relieving us all from this "That isn't PC or Health and Saftey conscious" Bee Ess thats going on.

When I was young I'd get a clip around the ear or worse, and it was MUCH worse in my parents days and the days before that etc. We need some more of that old school'in in this country for sure.

I am not saying beating people is a good way of getting results either; but at a young age it certainly helps you distinguish from right and wrong pretty ****ing quickly!

As far as parents using some physical persuasion to educate their kids....why the bloody hell not? As long as it isn't child abuse (excessive violence beyond the point you are trying to teach them).

I'm definatley going to be one beating my kids if they go disrespectin' me ;)

To say it's done no one any harm is a bit ambiguous.. It may seem like the obvious way to deal with unaccepatble behaviour but it's normally dealt out by people who have little or no understanding how a child mind works and the concepts of modern couching. Possibly becuase their own family did it to them, they think it's acceptable. Smacking or corporal punishment can have a detrimental effect on some children as my family and I found out with my son.

There are alternatives which are far are far more effective, depending on age.

Although I think this is a grand idea in theory, its not going to make kids listen as much these days. Although I am for liberal punishment, bringing old ways back, even ideas from military ways of discipline or something as its obvious the kids arent being given any form of that at home.

I'm not sure we need ruller spanking back in schools. But teachers/police should be allowed to physically remove and restrain people without the paperwork and possible consequences. Parents need to be allowed to punish there kids. Smacking is very good as a you child will not understand reason.

Like 5 minutes on the naughty step?

Cane at school at teacher's discretion.

Judicial caning ala Singapore at police station for minor criminal offenses.

Only way to restore law and order to this country :(

You mean like something other that hitting a child that's a 3rd my size??

Yep, taking time out from the situation works.. Sometimes you have to think like a child to address the issue.

for example, my son would scream like hell to when sent to bed.. It used to be a nightmare..However, I just before he kicked off I would say "If you don't go now, you sister stays up 30 minutes longer"..

Whossh gone.. no arguments.. and the same every night.

My lad isn't the same person he was 4 years ago and it's all been down to hard work without a raised hand. There are few here that me know my son, and I think they would agree that he's turned out allright :)

Oh right the thread was about physical punishment in schools? Ah i see. No, that shouldnt be brought back ever, too much room for abuse from teachers, AND the cane was a ****ing savage instrument, talk to any older man who had it done to them at school, having your trousers stick to your arse from heavy bleeding is not nice and its far too excessive no matter what the circamstances.

Mmm not so much the naughty step.. but time out to reflect what they have done.. They soon realise what they are missing out on and begin to understand consequences... Which is what this is all about.

I remeber getting into trouble.. and missing out on the school trip.. I was in isolation all day whilst the rest of the year went to London for the day.. I was gutted!

True the reason children think they can get away with it, is because they can, there's literally no comeback for doing bad things and they take that with them in the adult life.

You cannot rely on parents to do the disciplining.

I thought this was about punishment at school not about the rights or wrongs about hitting your kid because he wouldnt go to sleep,i dont think any decent parent would do that and instead they would talk to their child instead.

Huddy = The OcUK supernanny? :)

I think you are right 100% mate. If you have got the control and the ability to reverse a situation on a little'un who doesn't understand reason - that is the best way to do it. Unfortunatley some parents, as mentioned above, don't care or even know the alternatives.

I do think that for kids that are too young a small smack on the ass/wrist deffinatley helps them distinguish right from wrong a lot quicker :)
