What engine oil does everybody use?

Duckhams Q in there at the moment but it's crapper than the £3.99 Comma Motorway 20W50 I was putting in there before so I'll be going back to that.

Magnetec is sometimes semi-synth or mineral I believe - if so it could be bad news (must be fully synth for the BMWs).

I use Mobil 1 0w40, 19.99+VAT for 4l from Costco.

Magnatec 10w40 is made using synthetic techniques and is the most reccomended oil for higher than 60k BMW engines.

I use it in both the 328 and the 535.

what on earth? Why? you running a race car and track it everyweekend or something?

or do you only do 3-4k a year?

I've done a trackday before yeah, not a regular though.

It's a high revving whiney 4 pot with no service history, swapping the oil is cheap and doesn't take very long. Why not?:)

Whatever the garage puts in it.. and it gets done every 10K mls regardless.

(I have a feeling I may be treating my current car :))

More dry starts i guess pumping air out of your oil filter isnt all that great, by using a decent oil and sticking with the Honda period of 6k is pretty overkill on its own.

Dry starts? Do you mean the time it takes for the oil filter to fill up and build up pressure?

You could do that without the engine on, if you cared enough?

Pre-filling the oil filter and then turning the engine over on the starter until the oil pressure light goes out is the way I do it :)

I swear filling an oil filter is like an optical illusion though! They just seem to never fill up  :D

Yeah I put a bit in and let it soak in. There's no point putting too much in though as the filter is screwed on horizontally on most Honda's. It's right on the back of the block.

It was like that on the K series too. Right PITA.

T series is awesome though. Drivers wheel off, inner arch cover off... and the oil filter is right there... upright :D

Every 6k here.

And I used to do 400 miles a week of motorway driving!!

just seems an absolute waste of time changing oil every 4-6k. What are you trying to achieve?

motorway driving is one of the least stressful times on a cars engine, so even more wasteful changing oil so much.

How is £40-60 every 3 months "cheap". 12k or 1year oil change is by far enough.

It's a 15 year old 2 litre turbocharged engine that has just ticked over to 130,000 miles. I drive it hard nearly everytime I take it out.

If changing the oil every 6,000 miles keeps it running as well it is does now, then who cares if it costs £40+ to do so.

What are you trying to achieve?

Errr, to keep my engine heathly? More-so when I start modding the engine with bigger turbos and free flowing exhausts... pushing ~250bhp out of an engine originally meant to produce 197bhp needs looking after.

Where did I say I was looking for 'cheap' motoring? If I wanted cheap motoring I'd buy a 1.2 Corsa, not a 200bhp turbocharged car.
