Insurance - If a car is in my name, does it have to be insured?

But generaly DOC cover requires the other vehicle to be owned by someone else and to be insured by it's owner.

Totaly dependant on the insurer, i've yet to see/have a policy which requires the car to have another policy in force while i'm using my DOC.

Lol, asking the internet is generally quicker than sitting on the phone waiting for someone to pick up who doesn't really know much themselves!

oooh, cheers. I'll watch out for that.

Makes no sense, but then again these are insurance companies we're talking about, so it must be a policy based on money! :)

im lead to believe that third party on another car is only valid while other car has fully comp in someone elses name.

Bingo.

If your dad is fully comp on his car then he is only insured on a different car if someone else is fully comp on it, otherwise what's to stop people insuring a nova and driving a ferrari legally...

For my DOC no where does it say the other car has to be insured for me to be covered to drive it.

who you with out of curiosity ? because think about it, you can pay £300 to pay for insurance on a 1.2 corsa for example then drive a brand spanky new ST for nothing

And then when you crash it into a tree, your insurance company isn't bothered becuase they dont have to pay out for a 'brand spanky new ST' becuase the car itself is not covered. And if the ST is nicked again, your insurance company isn't bothered as it isn't their problem.

For someone who claims to work in insurance he doesn't seem that clued. Why would the cars insured status have any effect on an insurer offering DOC?

Umm, why? "We'll only insure this other car if somebody else insures it first", that makes real sense.

Even if the policy DID state that DOC needed the other car to be insured, why would it need to FC ?

Absolutely nothing. Although the moment you have an accident, you'll be in a "total loss" situation as DOC only gives 3rd party cover.

Im 28 though not 17, even a new ST would cost me about 400quid, whats the point in insuring a 1.2 corsa for 200 and have all the hassle of putting the new ST in someone elses name, explaining to the police when im stoped constantly because its not on the insurance database etc :P I'm with Morethan by the way.
