E8500 'Wolfdale' or Q6600

Not sure which to go for so anyone got any views. Going on a Rampage Formula X48 board with 8Gb and a 4870 card or two. Will this work out or does anyone have any better suggestions?

Ive had a q6600, a q9450 and a e8500... i still have the e8500, you really need to think about what your going to be doing with it, and if you would to overclock, lots of things to think about with both.

I don't think I will be overclocking an E8500 is it uses that much extra wattage!

I'd go quad, simply because I personally need the power for supcom, and I love multitasking, I have on occasions, started gaming and converting vids at once and also tryed to do more ( eg compress something in the meantime and burn a cd next to gaming and encoding/recoding/converting) but it would grind to a halt, being the impatient person I am a q6000 would be best for me, no need for more than 3.2 ghz c2d power anyways why not have 4 cores at that speed instead ?


Think if you will do more than one thing at once and if you're inpatient, if so then get a quad, if you just want superior speed to anything when doing a single thing or 2 at once, then get a duo...

Multitasking is not the right word here, more like a sick crazy multitasking.
Fast dual will do more than fine with few windows open, game running and a CD burning.

However if you burn cd, encode video, have 40 windows open, play a game and work in photoshop meanwhile, then ofcourse quad will be best choice.

And let's be honest here, there are not many ppl that do this stuff and therefore, even if you ocassionaly burn cd or encode a video while playing the game the dual is still more than fine.

If you have to ask the question get a C2D, you know with what you are doing if you really would find a C2Q actually useful...

why would anyone do anything else when gaming?... and your CD will prob have errors on it if your stressing your PC while doing it, in my exp

I thought Windows only allocates two cores when multitasking unless a program is written to be able to access all 4 cores on a Quad ?

Tbh you have nothing to loose.. The Q6600 has 2 extra cores (for applications that do use or will use quad core), overclocks well and is very well priced. It's a no brainner.

I play FSX, have Vista Ultimate x64, use Fireworks & Photoshop for playing with Digital images and game quite often (FPS & Driving games).

Am I right in thinking a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz+ is the answer?

fsx u need q6600 atleast @ 3 ghz

I love my q6600, i love being able to let my dad on the computer to check the email and later i can come back to it as i minimised it. Also a fair few times i have had to 3ish games (BF2, COD4 and some real life simulation thing that is my brothers) running at the same time. Also burn/encode a few dvds a week and i copy a dvd in like 10 minutes start to finish. Well worth it personally!
