fit and strong without going to the gym!

It's definitely possible. Basic stuff like situps, pressups, dips and pullups will help a lot but they're certainly not for everyone and can be not very effective in comparison to gym training.

Look up circuit training and get going.
 
what exercises should i be doing to get develope my whole body, i'd like my body to be stronger - a six pack would be nice as would stronger arms, back etc. IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE? or do i actually need to go to the gym/do weight lifiting.


to build muscle you need to do 3 thing:

eat
sleep
constantly perform intense workouts that will stimulate muscle growth

remove any of those and your potential growth will be stunted.

so, yes you will need equipment of some sort. be it weighted rucksack or a barbell and some weights.
 
You can get bigger muscles to an extent by just swimming, doing press-ups etc, but it will take a LOT longer to get there compared to using weights.
 
I'm also looking to get fitter/stronger, ideally without going to the gym and doing this from home. I haven't got a great deal of space but am looking to get the following :

OoOver, You'll need some bigger weights for that bench and a bar to really get the most out of it (it does not come with weights does it?). The dumbells would be ok for a while but they won't be nearly enough to use on the bench for most things.

I'd be tempted to get a really simple bench with nothing extra, buy some decent dumbells a bar and weights and just do that, would take up less room and I personally think you can do as many if not more exercises without having to worry about bits of metal sticking out the bench getting in the way.

I'm by no means an expert, only started going to the Gym 4months ago but I'd never mange to train the same at home as I'm able to in the gym, also the amount of different exercises you're able to do I'd never have worked out on my own, watching how other people do things makes a huge difference.
 
Does anyone swim at least once/twice a week in here? I'm wondering because i've just got back from holiday, swimming in the pool/sea etc and i can see a difference already so i'm planning on trying to swim at least once or twice in the morning before work.

What would the best stroke be? I've tried to look around the net, but i cant seem to find what muscle groups are used by each stroke etc

Yeah, I thought I'd need some barbells with that as well ... not sure which weights to go for though.

I would like to join a gym, but I don't have anything that close by , and the ones that are close by are rather expensive so this is why I've chosen to do this from home !

Is it best to get a set of barbells with a wide range of weights or start off low and then buy some heavier weights in the future?
 
You only want the one barbell not a set :D

I'd buy barbell set that comes with the dumbells to get you started m8. All comes in one cheaper package and you will definitely get the benefits from both of them. For a beginner i'd estimate you want something up to around 50kg ish.

Yer agreed, I'd be tempted to try for a little more than 50kg unless you can buy a set and then add weights to it later on. I've seen a few placed where you can make you're own set of weights as required or buy a ready made sets

I wonder how much people spend on equipment in the first year compares to the cost of a local gym. I bet its not too different really. Also, there will be so much more you can do and will be a safer (relatively) environment given you are new to things.

I'm thinking of how to know what weights to start with - I don't really excersize my arms but I do a fair bit of cycling :p

I can do around 20 push ups if that gives any indication :p

I wouldn't count on 50Kg being enough for very long, I'm skinny as a rake and have only been lifting for about 1 month and am already squatting 45Kg. I'm not sure how you'd get it on your shoulders without a rack either. For the time being a gym could be the better option, you won't be limited by what you can do and there will be people who can help or direct you :)
 
I would say you want about 100kg to start with. Ok you might not be lifting 100kg in any exercise but it will allow you to have some weights on a barbell and some on the dumbells. this will save time during sets / exercises by not needing to constantly move plates around to be used.
 
Oover, just so you know I'm currently benching 60kg, only been going to the gym for 4months and I'm as skinny as a rake! 100kg as morba said would be a lot better.

spinlock is annoying. also, if you are training at home i would advise against it completely.
get a proper olympic bar and some proper weights.
