Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Atheism, oh no!!!!

Just call yourself a Sikh and wear a bangle, rules do not seem to apply then!!!

Oh dear!!

Not sure why you consider that bad, it's simply reaffirming a law lords decision from 25 years ago that rules should not discriminate unnecessarily. The Sikh religion is different from many others in that things like the kara are actually written and explained within the texts (as opposed to something like a christian wearing a cross). Given that a school is a public body, they have a specific responsibility to ensure non-discriminatory policies, something the school failed at.

Given that this thread is about discrimination against atheists, and that is being criticised, why is preventing discrimination against Sikhs a bad thing?

Everyone has the right to follow whatever faith they want too and to believe in what ever they choose too.

At no time should someone elses beleiefs have any impact upon what I believe in.

I’m sorry but its ridiculous cant you just accept what teachers tell you to take off? You get sent out of lessons for wearing caps, rings etc what’s different? Oh sorry its written in a book so she must be allowed to wear it

Another point: How come witchcraft seems to be in the same category as sexual deviance & criminal activity?

You're trying to tell me that not all witches sacrifice goats, cast curses on people and participate in orgies?

I can only assume it is based on ignorance of the various different denominations (for want of a better word) that witchcraft can be split into and therefore lumping some of the more extreme variants with the milder.

 back to you for failure to understand and an irrelevant comparison.

If discrimination against the sikh girl is ok, then the actions of this council in discriminating against atheists is also ok.

If we're going to respect people's beliefs, then we have to do it equally.

Is Birmingham city council's ban on atheist websites ok?

Your opinion of the sikh religion isn't relevant to the issue at hand, the question is should we respect people's beliefs (whether we agree with them or not), or should councils and the state be allowed to discriminate against certain beliefs through their behaviour or rules?

I have been to a few Wiccan rituals and believe me their was no goats and much to my disappointment no orgies.

I just hate they way (mostly by the mainstream religions) that us Pagans get branded as Satanists or sexual deviants...ok some of us are sexual deviants. ;)

The roll eyes weren’t at you they are at the whole religion thing, why isn’t the comparison irrelevant? I couldn’t give a monkey about Christianity Islam etc as I simply don’t believe in what a book tells you to do and religion in general! it’s wrong for the council to ban them visiting religious websites yes but I can say from what I read and hear about some rules they favour other religions in this country that is what gets me wound up.

My opinion is relevant as somebody posted the link and I responded to that.

It isn't discrimination /argument.

Yes it is, because they are making no allowance for the stated tennants of her faith. Ergo, they have made it impossible for her to practice her beliefs and attend that school, that's a classic definition of discrimination.

A policy that tries to treat everyone the same can still be discriminatory if it's terms are such that a group of people cannot abide by them.
