Pretty simple. You can, and will, buy only 1 car for life - that is the scenario. It must be a mass-produced, standard vehicle, but money is not a limiting factor here. It can be anything, as long as you remember to consider rising fuel prices, maintenance, reliability, suitability for your future life (e.g. consider kids or a growing family), image. You will own this vehicle until you die, and it is the only vehicle you'll be able to drive most of the time [e.g. rentals abroad are exceptions]. You can't rely on your significant other to keep changing vehicles, assume you're either too socially unsuitable to hold down a partner, or the partner doesn't like cars - whatever will get you to play this game nicely.

I do however ask that you JUSTIFY your choice.

I'll start: a new defender 110 XS. Big enough to carry friends/family/stuff. Timeless. Spares will be around for ever. Easy to maintain since there are few complex electronic bits. Appears to be "built tough" so should stand the test of time.

1 car. for ever.

GO.

I'd probably have a Monaro/VXR8. Big enough to fit kids in the back, decent boot, well equipped, comfortable, fairly straightforward servicing... and a V8 :D

BMW 530i M Sport Touring LCI.

272bhp, 40mpg combined, low CO2, yet still reasonably quick with all the toys and space should I need it.

Watch this thread now full of people convinced an Audi RS6 will be sustainable in 10 years time..

Fuel not being an issue, I would have said the RS6, but fuel is an issue, so instead I went for something a bit more economical, but that gains a lot from being mechanically simple, and bolted together rather like a mechano set

Probably this, or similar.

Would certainly have to be an estate for putting dogs, trees, wine from France trips and other essentials in.

Would have to be quick enough to satisfy the wife and I on motorways and getting out of the 50,000 roundabouts she crosses on her commute.

Would have to be comfortable to do London to Newcastle, non-stop.

Would have to be reasonably easy to manoever around town.

If we could have one each then she could have the bimmer and I'd have a RR Phantom Drophead just for motorway trips.

E93 330i se auto touring with a shed load of options including comfort seats, dogs nuts stereo etc.

Justification: Arguably the best all-rounder available for a family. Better looking than the E60, more reliable than the diesel. As an auto, the missus will be happy with it, and at a later stage in life, I won't be wondering why I still have a clutch pedal. Not a sport as I'd rather have the comfort, but without buying a Citroen C6.
Basically, an awesomely competent appliance that also has a good feel good factor.
