If a gearbox were to....die/explode/cease to function?

phate is a mechaphiliac. IE makes love to cars... and his dong of titanium preportions pierced his gearbox.

i blew mine to bits by launching at 6k rpm. it launched fine and drove fine for a further 15minutes, turned out i had spun a bearing in the gearbox, which punched a hole in the casing, casuing it to lose all its oil and eventually debris getting lodged inebtweengears and screwing my selector forks up :D

the attention is nice but the amount of flak that could potentially arrive from everyone just isn't worth the effort.
 
Engine would rev up, car would commence freewheeling, maybe some grinding/squealing.

Drive wheels will lock up, you'll spin around and around, smash into a tree backwards and die in a huge fireball, maybe some screaming.
 
It's strange as people know already and more people are going to know on Saturday so it's going to come out. He might aswell tell the whole stroy now before it gets twisted chinese whispers stylee.

We all do stupid things every now and then.

On the contrary I'm on the train home and this is the first bit of signal I've had (damn tube)

Long story cut very short...

Car was stolen and written off not 3 weeks after I had had it. I had a specialist look at it who also supplied the parts and had it repaired.

During the accident the driveshaft was pulled from the gearbox, haven't had time to replace the gear box yet, it should be fine, but I was told "probably best to replace it" - hence why I have a new gearbox waiting to be bolted on.

Hopefully after everyone has read this they will know why I kept it off the forum.

Happy now? :p
 
I'm on my 5th gearbox ;)

have had everything from the differential sunwheel popping out (no drive, but speedo shoots up) to holes in the casing (ally)

usually the boxes crunch or whine for a bit before going, but most of mine just go pop

have also had sheared driveshafts etc, which at first glance looks like a gearbox problem
 
Box in my old valver whined for a bit, then on the way to the garage to have it replaced it went bang and the car coasted to a halt crunching away. When i got out the gearbox fluid was being emptied all over the road along with plenty of little bits of metal.

It was great waiting for the AA for nearly 2 hours just to move me the remaining 0.8 of a mile to the garage!
