Dozens blinded in India looking for Virgin Mary

Reasons to slow down when reading thread titles #3257:

I expected this thread to link to a story about 'Dozens blinded in India looking for Virgin fat chicks'.

Yes, no, Yes.
Not funny though, more like retarded and sad, bloody idiots...
Religion + stupidity = Terrible result...
how long did they try to look into the sun ?

A more pressing question is how can a Virgin Mary give birth !

I can't believe they put so much blind faith into this.
Boom Boom!!

Stupid, probably. Then again maybe to be expected, seeing as rural India probably doesn't have the highest literacy rates around. As to whether religion is to blame, I would hazard a guess that it is more curiosity than anything else seeing as the majority of Indians are Hindu rather than Christian.

I fell sorry for them, they likely wouldn't have known any better.

Considering that the intensity of the sunlight on earth is only around 1.2mW per mm^2 (considered eyesafe even for lasers) they must have been staring at it for a long time to go blind.

Lasers have IR and UV filters though.

IR is blocked by the cornea because the wavelength is so long, it doesn't reach the retina. Even though there is UV radiation, the total energy reaching the retina is no higher than a laser of the same intensity so it doesn't make a difference (ionisation is not a factor here).
