Totally. One name I've not seen mentioned yet is Alun Cochrane, seen him compere at the Comedy Store a couple of times and thought he was really funny - dealt with a couple of hecklers brilliantly. Rich hall also had me in stitches.
Alun Cochrane is great, I've seen him do his own set a few times, he tends to get distracted and go off on a bit of a tangent though
my wee brothers away to see some comedian tonight in edinburgh.
...tim minchan??
tim minchin - aussie musical comedian, lots of people liken him to bill bailey, he's very good and doing a uk tour later this year
I go to see stand up at least once a week, and have seen plenty of those mentioned above.
Tefal, I do think steve hughes is great, and i'm not a big (or even small) fan of chris rock, but you cant really compare them, they're just not targetted at the same people, like i've seen steve hughes on a bill straight after jim jeffries and they're both great at what they do, but the audience didnt really go for steve hughes as they'd got into the jim jeffries mindset, which is basically well told knob gags

Those are all currently touring on the small-medium circuit and are very much worth checking out, they'll normally only cost you a few quid.
I would also recommend seeing people from tv, like quiz show regulars, if you get the chance, granted not all of them are there because of their standup prowess but a good few are and you're likely to be in for a treat.
As far as the big names go, it's just whatever takes your fancy really, personally I dont get that much appeal from the mainstream targetted stand ups, lee evans, peter kay, but really like eddie izzard and bill bailey, I also tend to favour comedians who seem intelligent even if it's in a bit of a bumbling way, rich hall and will self
