OcUK Poker Thread.

You can start with a sum as low as £5, I certainly have. Just pray variance doesn't kick in too early ;)

Indeed, don't get me wrong you can play for very low stakes but I find that if I put in a slightly larger amount it'll stop me from going full tilt and getting rebuys thinking that they're only cheap. Once I've put money in my account it must last me a week or whatever.

How much do you spend on average per month playing it, in relation to your return ?

Also whats the best site to go with ?

I play on Pokerstars and PKR. Spend about £50 a month although I've not played any for the last 3 months. I'm only a casual gamer but my returns have been from a total loss on one occasion to winning about £350 on month, although it usually averages out at a return of about £30 or so a month. I make sure I have descrete periods, so at the end of the month I will zero my account so I don't lose my winnings.

Im going to deposit on pkr becuase i'm going to believe that it attracts very weak players who are playing for the way it looks.

That exactly the reason why I play on PRK and keep pokerstars for when I want to play against decent opponents.

I know it's irrational but I just don't like attaching my cards to stuff like that. Meh looks like I will have to.

Only play with 5% of your roll at any given table if you are serious about building your cash up and not just there for a quick gamble. Even the best players can go on >10 buy-in downswings when the cards run against them. Learn on the 10 cent tables because you WILL go broke at least once.

I speak from experience because I used to have terrible bankroll managemenet. I'd deposit 10$, put it all on one table, maybe double it up once or twice then get unlucky and get wiped out. Went broke 10 times like this then eventually strung a few wins together and get a decent sized roll (~$100).

From here I started playing sensibly, playing with at least 20 buy-ins for the level I was at in order to avoid risk of ruin, and gradually built up to about $5k playing 4 tables of 0.25-50c.

The play is in general really really bad at all limits until you get up to something like $2-$4, when you'll start to come across some true grinders of the game. So if you study hard, manage your money sensibly, don't go on tilt (easier said than done, I still tilt a little now but you must recognise it and quit the moment you get a little hot under the collar), then there is no reason why anyone can't make a nice little profit at the low stakes.

Good advice.

Can people who play on PKR please post their name? I would like to keep an eye out for OcUK players ;)

With the changes the 2005 Gambling Act kicking in recently, you can now put limited side bets on games of Poker down the pub.

Last week we played 2 games and put on £5 side bets on each game.

I walked away with the money in both games because people don't know how to play properly for money.

:D

if you played them on same day then you breached the new laws, it's £5 per person per day :p

Listen to this man if you're interested in playing. The three main reasons (imo) people lose money at poker are (in order):
  • Poor bankroll management
  • Poor starting hand selection (people play too many hands)
  • Not enough laydowns (once you make a good hand like two pair, you never put it down when it appears you're beat)
