Woohoo... just discovered that the garage hasn't secured my undertray so one side of it is dragging along the road. I opened the window and heard a horrible noise...

Could be worse I suppose.

Where do I stand if it's even more borked than it was before? It was damaged from grounding but certainly secure and not dragging.. should I expect them to resolve FOC? I'll have to drive along to them pretty damn slowly in the morning :(

I officially hate my car now :(

why don't you just re-attach it?

I was looking to cable tie it or something temporarily, but even so it's quite dark now and can't see naff all. I don't have the torx screws or screwdrivers necessary to do it properly anyhow :( I have no drive and no means of getting under the car comfortably either.

This is a weakness on the MK4 golf I see so many with a loose undertray. That and blown rear bulbs is common on them too.

No problems with bulbs so far *touch wood* although I can't believe the stupid design that makes changing the front ones a nightmare.

For a manufacturer that has always played on it's reliability reputation, it's a bit of a joke really. From talking to workmates that have had/own Golfs a list I can pluck from my head for common problems seems to be:

- Secondary air pump rivets breaking and pump blowing noisily
- The famous rear washer jet problem, leading to....
- Boot lock sensor failure, causing random alarm triggering
- Undertrays getting grounded/damaged
- Starter motors grinding
- Issues with central locking
- Windows dropping into the doors
- Breather pipes splitting
- Coil packs failing

Fortunately I've only seen a few of these, but still. Meh, just a bit fed up really and I'm really tempted to chop it in once I get back from France seeing as I'll have 4.5K handy (I would hope about 5-6k trade in value for mine). While the undertray not being secured is the garage's fault, it's just another thing that has made me grow annoyed with the car :(

my car only has an undertray on the left, it's missing the middle and the right..
i didn't even realise cars had undertrays :o

i was quoted a figure around £100 for the middle section for a seat leon, surely this seems absurdly high for what is essentially a piece of plastic?

the dealer only fitted the right-hand side, to protect the cambelt, which i thought was quite honest..

I've seen this on VAG cars quite a lot - especially Golfs and Fabias. Surely you've got to be a pretty laxidasical mechanic to forget to tighten the undertray back up?

i got a tyre done once so decided to get the spare done too

drove off and "bang" spare tyre fell out the back

ford fiesta and their crap design of spare holder lol

My uncle had that happen on his pug 309. Unforutantly my dad was following behind and it ended up underneath our escort, wedged up against the rear axle beam:eek:

I once took my undertray off and put it back on again all by myself.

5 miles later driving through town it fell off.

I had to then use my warning triangle and EVERYTHING.

Meh... I drove it back and the chap there fixed it in 5 mins. Was very apologetic too so I forgive them. Partly to do with a clip that was busted so I wouldn't have been able to do that myself methinks :) I was a bit wound up last night and had a bit of a bad day so sorry for whining :p Working 6/7 days a week is making me a bit edgy.

The guy at the garage said they were ridiculously expensive - about £96. He said that it's difficult to get them in decent condition from a breakers as well due to it being such a common problem. :(

Apparently my sump tray is missing too but that's very common and I'm not too bothered. I think I might remember when I lost that - I do remember a thunking noise underneath some months ago but thought I'd just created roadkill or something... :D

Now to get that scratch sorted out and I'll be a bit less peeved...

See, that's what I could see happening if I did it myself :) I'm not great with car mechanics (apart from the usual checks, topping up levels etc), so I'd end up screwing something up on the car :) It's easy for people to say "do it yourself", but then it's simple to someone who is that way inclined. Just as playing an instrument is to a musician, for example. :D
