Solar Eclipse August 1st

i just saw it wearing some sunglasses and through a layer of tinted perspex...looks pretty cool. Tried taking pics but it didnt' work :(

Not going to see anything up here. Bucketing down with rain with a very low cloudbase. So low in fact we are almost in it!! We live on top of a very big hill surrounded by mountains.

I saw it - we made a pinhole in a piece of card and reflected the image on to a white piece of paper.
Magnified it to around the size of a 20p and you could definitely see the small bite out of the sun.... excellent fun.

One of the only ways you can do this without using a special mylar / perspex filter. Seriously people, dont look at the sun directly . . . . Even 2/3 pairs of sunglasses will still damage your eyes due to the infra red / uv radiation. You might think its dark enough, but without a proper solar filter/solar glasses etc. you can still damage your eyes.

Wait... i thought there wasn't going to be another solar eclipse in our lifetimes. like, the next thousand years?

or was that Total Eclipse...
There are total eclipses quite frequently. The trouble is, that they are only total in a narrow strip across one part of the earth. Anyone outside that narrow strip only sees a partial eclipse.

So today's, although total in one part of the earth, is only partial for us.

Within UK, as others have pointed out, the most recent total solar eclipse was in 1999, which I was lucky enough to see in Cornwall. My mother tells me that she saw the previous UK one when at school in the early 1920s. The next UK one is, I believe, more than a lifetime in the future, but nothing like a thousand years away.

There is a massive Eclipse next year, we'll see around 90% of it apparently and it's going to last for 6 1/2 minutes.

It will be around the west of American (California, LA e.t.c)
