Suit question for you suit wearers

Iam getting a tailored suit, out here in Bangkok and iam a little usure as to what you mean by notched collar?

Iam about 6,2 and quite slim, a guy above said if you have a slim figure go for no vents, can someone again explain this. Or even better provide a photo? Have searched google, but cant find much.

Thanks all

From google images search for 'notched collar':

Notice the notches in either side of the lapels, as opposed to no-notched, which I usually associate with tuxedos rather then suits.

Vents allow the back of the jacket to hang straight around your arse. Basically, it's just a slit in the fabric about three inches long, either straight up the back or over your kidneys (kinda where you'd move the jacket to put your hands in your pockets)

However, the venting affects the cut of the jacket and the way it hangs on you. It also affects how the jacket moves over your body as you move around. If you have no vents then the jacket will sit closer to your body (hips) and will look more 'fitted' but it might restrict your movements because there will be less give.

Your tailer should be able to give you advice as to which is best for your ass.

pick up an existing coat (jacket/blazer) you may own. Turn it around so you can see the back. At the bottom, by the seat (bum), is there a single slit in the fabric (1 vent), two slits, symmetrically either side of the centre of the jacket (2 vents) or no slits at all (no vents)? The slits will be about 10-15cm in length, and a double-vent coat will create the effect of having a "flap".

Historically, this was for when coats were worn when riding and the cut had to be maintained whilst sitting down.

go for 2 vents. 1 vent = M&S. no vents = italian. 2 vents, classic, perhaps not "cool", but timeless

Yeh just watched that vid, 2 vents look smart, I reckon. They also say go for 2 buttons down the middle, most poeple on here have said 3. Hmmmmm

where the hell do you live to be a boat, helicopter and then 100miles from a suit shot? the amazon?

Old fashioned tbh. I had two on my school blazer.

Vent designs have been around for about the same time, it's just that two vents is the classic British cut and one vent is America. Therefore you will have seen two vents more.

No vent is seen as being more modern, but you need to have no ass to get it to fit - and that's the key.

I don't really care how many vents my suits have, I just want them to hang on me correctly.

Any ideas off where I can get a few designs from off the net to show the talior? Really like that slim look in that video and the dark brown, was originally thinking about a grey. Only looking for a casual suit that will be smart for weddings/interviews and the like tho.

two buttons is best. 3 is either a "new age"ish look or for very very tall people who want the same chest-to-lapel cutaway angle that's achieved with a 2-button on a normal height person, but on a tall person. 6ft2 is not tall - go for 2.

Thanks, do you think a plain suit would be best? I dont really like pin-stripped but would like some kinda simple design if possiable?

If you don't like pin-stripes, you'll probably dislike chalk-stripes too.

Your choices are either a flat colour suit (I suggest a dark blue, not a black), or a herringbone weave flat colour suit (looks like a single colour, but up close it has a pattern to the material).

Just ordered a dark brown, which has a kind off stripped patten on it not pinstripped. Also getting a light grey one.

Went for dark brown,

2 buttons/3 on cuff with seem showing
2 vents
slight cut into the lapel

Grey
3buttons and 3 on cuff
1 vents
slight cut into the lapel

When for a light cream plain shirt aswell, trousers are plain with one pocket on button.

Thoughts guys?
