EA has explained why there are currently no plans to release a PS3 version of hotly anticipated PC and Xbox 360 RTS Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, saying Sony's console is "very exotic and tough to develop for".

Red Alert 3, the first Red Alert game in seven years, had been slated for a PC, 360 and PS3 release when it was first announced. However publisher EA put the PS3 version on hold with no explanation - until now.

When VideoGamer.com visited EA's UK HQ for some hands-on with the title, EALA producer Amer Ajami told us that when development began the developer found that its game engine wasn't suited to the PS3.

He said: "We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture. PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it's very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn't designed for PS3."

However, there is still hope for PS3-owning Red Alert fans. Ajami told us that EALA "might go back and do something with the PS3 later on".

Surely as EA is such a huge company they can spare a few PS3 engineers to different departments.

Maybe its just not financially viable and profitable to port onto the PS3.

What i think though is there is a boycott from developers who dont want the PS3 to do well, Microsoft paying off developers! :p

Getting bored of this 'tough to develop for' excuse. Considering 1 guy in his bedroom managed to make a game for it, the biggest games company in the world is struggling? I call shenanigans.

What i think though is there is a boycott from developers who dont want the PS3 to do well, Microsoft paying off developers! :p

Or maybe they just install their own, sorry i mean ex VP's as VP's in EA **cough** Peter Moore **cough**

Exactly. Ea's games sell more on the PC and PS3 than 360 or Wii

Something I posted in a thread a few days ago

PS3 is EA's biggest source of income

EA released their incredibly dry Q1 financial report for investors last night. Nestled amongst the self-congratulations and expectations for the future lie some interesting numbers regarding console-specific income. Put bluntly, the PS3 is EA's largest source of income right now, and has been since the beginning of 2008. Not bad for a console Riccitiello regrets backing.

For those of you who can't get enough of numbers, here's a breakdown how much, in millions, each console brought to the EA table at the end of Q1 2008 (April - June) . Bracketed numbers show the amount of income generated during the same period last year, followed by the percentage increase. For more details, including plenty of fun tabulated data, check out the report for yourself.

PS3: 139mln (13mln, 969%)
360: 81mln (47mln, 72%)
PS2: 79mln (61mln, 30%)
Wii: 57mln (29mln, 97%)

EDIT: Not that I'm fussed, RTS games for me belong on my PC.

Games for PlayStation 3 bring home the most money for EA, according to fresh financial papers released just last night.

EA software sales for the system between April and June increased 969 per cent over the same period last year. Sony's console has now been the major bread winner for EA since the start of 2008.

The PS3 made USD 139 million for the publisher during the quarter, followed by PC with USD 86 million and Xbox 360 with USD 81 million.

The PS2 was only marginally behind with USD 79 million, while Wii and PSP tied on USD 57 million.

Mobile games performed well to take USD 44 million, leaving DS in last position - for a change - with USD 21 million.

That means games for Sony systems combined to make a total of USD 275 million for EA during those three months.

Wii and DS development is one of the areas grey-maned EA boss John Riccitiello has already ear-marked for extra focus, revealing he has 40 games in the works for both platforms.

Riccitiello told us earlier this week that he made the "wrong call" by assuming PS3 and Xbox 360 would be the current generation leaders.

One thing to bear in mind, byt the looks of it that is how much they bought in from each console.
No number on actual units sold, cost per unit, or cost to produce, by the sounds of it EA haven't put as much effort into the DS/Wii which could account for the relatively lower income from them.

The big question is always when porting from one console to another, is it worth it - a game might well be expected to sell a million copies if ported, but if the costs to do so are expected to be very high/take to long then it could well be they decide it's not worth it compared to other projects (if you can do 2 or 3 other ports/projects for the same cost in time and money, but make more profit for example).

The PS3 has so little RAM and an unusual CPU, certain games can't be done on it.

You do know the PS3 and Xbox have the same amount of RAM right? 512mb

Albeit the Xbox can share its memory between CPU and GFX whereas the PS3 has a fixed 256mb for the CPU and another 256mb for the GFX.

In addition to the post I made earlier showing EA's numbers for sales, it seems Activision are anticipating something similar

PS3 to Outsell Xbox 360 This Year, says Activision

Is this the year of the PS3? Yes and no. According to Activision, the PS3 will indeed outsell the Xbox 360, but neither platform will come close to touching the Wii.

In a conference call following the June quarter earnings release from Activision, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith provided his company's own forecast for how the console wars would turn out in 2008. While Nintendo is still the big winner, Activision does think Sony will edge out Microsoft this year.

The Wii is forecast to sell 15 million units in 2008, compared to 8 million units for the PS3 and 6-7 million units for the Xbox 360. And Sony's PS2, which after all these years is still thriving, is expected to sell a total of 4-5 million units this year.

Additionally, while Griffith did not provide a breakdown for PSP versus Nintendo DS, he did state that the portable market will see unit sales of more than 24 million.

Doesn't really change anything for us end users of course, just thought it was interesting to read after the EA post.

Nintendo thrashing everybody else, everybody loves puppies!! ;)

Vin.

EDIT: and speaking of the EA numbers earlier, one thing that did surprise me is that EA sales are higher on PC than 360. I'd assumed the PC market was lower than 360 these days!

I don't why they both have so little RAM, for companies like sony or microsoft they should be able to get at least a gig for almost nothing.

I guess "almost nothing" is still something, when it comes to keeping their costs as low as possible, and to be fair, ram was considerably more expensive just a few years ago. I paid £200 for 2gb this time 2 years ago, and these days it's what, £30-£40?

Devs do a fantastic job with the memory available, but it does make you wonder how much further they could push things, if they did have a full gig of RAM or so.

Vin.
