grinding noise

mates got an M reg escort and when he stops theres a grinding noise from the rear drivers side, the kinda noise you get when on a steep hill and you slowly release the brakes. when its driven theres a fairly loud wurring noise from the same sort of area. A friend said she heard a noise like something was grinding on the road as he drove passed. could this be the wheel bearing ?

It could be, it could also be a seized caliper (if it has rear discs).
 
took it for a drive and found out what the knocking noise was. when i removed the hub cap the metal cover in the middle had come off. another mate took a look and thinks its the bearing but couldnt find any movement in the wheel

Mine did that a few weeks ago and we though the back bakes were in pieces!
 
apparantly the bearings we're replaced when the brakes were done and should still be under warranty :)
