They haven't always used them, I've seen videos of pilots climbing out. Chances are if they have to use the window, ie fire in the cockpit, they may not be in a position to use a rope.

I think that the owners of the building not cleaning the chimney saved her, whether god affected that could be discussed till the cows come home, at the end of the day it is not provable/disprovable or right/wrong.
