Worth upgrading to wolfdale?

Having done so more digging am I correct in thinking the stock speed of the E8500 is the maximum that would to compatible with my RAM anyway?

(4x1GB) DDR2 675MHz/PC2-5400 XMS2 Memory

I believe that it very much depends on your motherboard, divider used etc

Am a newb to intel (e8400)/ddr2 and overclocking such myself but found I could easily o/clock to 3600 by increasing fsb to 400 and fixing ram as 1066 ddr2 (this is the ram I have) (both in bios).
The motherboard itself adjusted the divider etc and I believe would do the same for any ram.

My board is the Asus P5K .

Did notice that the board increased the voltage to the cpu slightly to 1.2 volt
and there was a small increase in temps BUT rock solid . Given current heatwave have reverted to standard 3ghz but intend ,once it cools of a bit and the TIM has bedded in to aim for 4ghz (tbh would be happy with 3.6 :D)

It's a rev1 ds3, dont think it will take wolfdale's, was no bios for it last time I checked.

Well as he's got the rev1 then it won't work, but if he had the rev 3.3 then he would have a chip that should clock higher, run cooler and use less power if he got a wolfdale.

It was a rhetorical question;)

Not worth the expense with new tech on the horizon.

3.3ghz C2D is plenty for anyone at this point in time.

Ahh I see, yep I agree 3.3GHz is more than enough for now, I'm running 3.6 and don't plan on upgrading for a while yet! Save yer money, spend it on something else like a terabyte HD or something. :)

well I beg to differ I can see a difference from gaming to general use from my [email protected] and my [email protected] with fsb500x8.5 on my commando for months with this chip. It would also run happily at 600x7 for 4.2g OC untill I added another 2x1g modules, so I think that MB should be ok if want to spend the cash especially at the price now and then can wait for the price of Nehelem+MB+DDR3 to drop in price.

As everyone said, not worth it.

But if you REALLY WANT the upgrade and got nothing to do with the cash then grab the new incomming E8600, slap in TRUE with good noctua, or 2 and have some fun aiming at 5ghz air ;-).

Like everyone has said there is no NEED to upgrade.

But who cares about need, u WANT to upgrade.

£150 for at least 4Ghz.

Go for it, its only money!

so many mugs replace perfectly good processors for ones which can get 100mhz higher.. IMO its just plain stupid, but the worst of all is that you might have lots of money, so fine, but others who ask for advice are told the opinions of those who blow money for fast mhz and a 1fps difference regardless of the extra price

Worth upgrading to wolfdale?
I think it depends how you define "Worth" :D

You have a nice chip and processor frequency there, I too also use an E6300. I think the main difference between a new Wolfdale and your older 2MB-Conroe is that you would either be able to run the new chip 500MHz-1000MHz faster *or* run it at similar speeds using hardly any voltage at all (eco-friendly and cheaper leccy bills).

And then there is the *shiny* factor, it's always good to have new toys to play with, that's certainly "worth" something! :)

Hmmmm decisions decisions, think I'll wait untill the new E8600's come out and see what people are getting out of them and what happens with the current prices of the E8400 and E8500's.

Shame that my board won't accept wolfdale's otherwise I'd upgrade straight away!

VTR, just to put a thought out there may I suggest you upgrade your mobo to a new INTEL® P45 express chipset?

I've used one for maybe a week or two and am finding it very good, would set you up nicely for any further chip upgrades and would perhaps work a bit of magic with your E6300. I reckon you may have nearly maxed that chip but an P45 mobo would either get you a few more MHz maybe or allow the same clock but with less voltage.

Are they as good as the X38 boards? Looks like a good cheaper alternative board, reason I was thinking x38 though is for the crossfire support?
