Carrying a Knife

About the legality of carrying knives, and the size of the knife: -

Directgov said:
What is and isn't legal
  • it is illegal for any shop to sell a knife of any kind (including cutlery and kitchen knives) to anyone under the age of 18
  • it is generally an offence to carry a knife in public without good reason or lawful authority (for example, a good reason is a chef on the way to work carrying their own knives)
  • the maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is four years in prison and a fine of £5000
  • knives where the blade folds into the handle, like a Swiss Army Knife, aren't illegal as long as the blade is shorter than three inches (7.62 cms)

Some of the people on here really get on my nerves.

Firstly as already mentioned, not just any Sikh can carry one, they have to abide by strict religious rules and there aint many of them about.

Secondly, most of the knifes are smaller than three inches and covered so legal and a lot of them are actually fixed and cant be used.

Thirdly it is forbidden for Sikhs to use them, and there are only some exceptions.

Fourthly, as many have said, has anyone found any evidence at all yet that any Sikh has killed or injured anyone with one yet?!

Fifthly, most of you guys on here have made very little effort/know very little about Sikhism or the law.

Sixthly, as the exception has already been made Siks ARE abiding by the law so all this crap about them packing their bags and going is rubbish. Some of them are British born, should they leave to!

Seventhly, this country or any other country doesnt really belong to any group of people any more, the world is so mixed and getting more and more mixed that this really is an old idea.

Eigthly, someone saying they are intimidating as you dont know why people are carrying them etc etc and you would cross the road if you saw a Sikh with a knife, get a life and while you are at it perhaps educate yourself about the major world religions.

Ninthly, the country is a democratic multicultural one and some people here are very ignorant and display very little tollerence.

Tenthly, maybe one of the big cry babies in the thread should look up the fact that in World War Two the largest voluntary army in recorded history fighing for Britain and Europe was a 2.5Million man Indian army and many of them were Sikhs. Dont you think letting a few carry a unusable knife is owed?!

Oh and before anyone starts winging, i know my spelling is bad and i have made up some words but its late!

who cares if they do it with honour and respect? the blade is still intimidating to people who have no idea of why its is carried

who cares if the country is peopled by ignorant, uneducated xenophobes who dont take the time to understand other cultures and religions?

the law is he law. he's perfectly within it.

i dont see the problem?

Pack their bags and leave? Sorry but it’s our county I think it should be them packing their bags.

No mate, if you don't agree with the laws, you should pack your bags. Why should I leave due to the ignorance of people like you?

who cares if they do it with honour and respect? the blade is still intimidating to people who have no idea of why its is carried

why should there be one law for the majority but allowances for religions?

Honour and respect is a big part of why it's an exception. Also the people that have no idea of why it's carried should stop being ignorant and open their eyes, there are lots of sikh people around and most people know the basics of our religion, if more people listened at school there would be little issues.

sikhs can also have like a necklace or bracelet type of thing that has a small knife on it as a substitution to carrying a real one

Small correction, yes some do wear a necklace with a symoblic kirpan on it but the bracelet which you are referring to is a separate symbol representing the continuation of the existence of god, it's not a substitute for the kirpan, they make up 2 of the 5k's.

And we're just going to take their word for it? Why should we only believe Sikhs when they say they're not going to use it?

Yes you should, i'm a Sikh and whilst it may be difficult for you to truly understand what the kirpan represents, I can assure you it is not used in any inappropriate ways, have you heard of a case where a kirpan has been used as a weapon? We have been here for a good 60-70 years now and we are a damn good part of society.

That is what is happening ,all the decent people are emigrating to australia and such leaving behind all the foreigns that are taking over this pc joke of a country .

You know where the door is.

if its for their religion why dont they just carry a mock blade?

i hate our pussy government.

It IS a mock blade, it's not live, its inoperable.

Who comes here? You could become a Sikh tommorow if you wanted to.

Well actually you can't really, to become a fully 'baptised' sikh, one who has to adhere to wearing all the 5k's, requires a lot of commitment and it's not something that is just done at request. If you 'converted' tomorrow and you caused some form of attack with a kirpan (you may as well of used a butter knife), then in that individual case, the authorities would know that you are not actually a 'baptised' sikh.

I have not said hes not within the law , I am saying my opinion is the law shouldnt allow one group of people to carry blades just because their beliefs dictate it , we should all be treated equally whatever beliefs we have
Thats not being ignorant or xenophobic its being fair and equal to all the nations population

A religion shouldn't be able to come in conflict with laws, if a law states you cant carry an "offensive weapon" then you cant carry one regardless of religion or belief.
You live in this country you follow its rules, they arnt there and shaped around its citizens they are there for whoever it concerns simple as!

souns like mashete did it look like this :D

The guy was carrying a foot long knife in public. There is no place for that in this country. The intended use of the object is not relevant. Ones beliefs should not give one the right to do something that another person can't. It's also nothing to do with Sikhism, or other religions, ignorance or intolerance. The fact that someone can do something that a normal law abiding citizen would not be able too do simply because they believe in something is ridiculous.

It's the same thing as the girl that recently won a court case for being allowed to wear a Sikh bracelet (not picking on the Sikhs btw, was just fresh in my mind) in school. Sorry, but the schools policy is no jewellery. I don't see why someone's religion should change that, or any other rule or law.

We're being discriminated against in our own country and no one has the balls to do anything about it.

Who cares about thier religion!! This is Great Britain for goodness sake not Pakistan, India, Iraq etc etc!!

We have laws here and they should abide by them. Why should they have a different set of rules? Pathetic!!

Its about time the government stood up for the 'real' citizens of the UK and stop letting these people live the way they want to while the rest of us have to toe the line.

And as for anyone on here saying they should be allowed to carry knives etc etc, they should go and live in thier country and try to do things that is against that countries laws etc!!

What is happening to this country for goodness sake!!
