... and still do but everything seems against me, and things don't seem to be getting any easier ...

How I wish I was posting this to say I'd got one but alas not.

It doesn't make any financial sense to bother buying one to me. If I bought new, depreciation would be horrendous (but of course I could buy 2nd hand), the main problems however, is the current fuel cost and the proposed car tax changes :(

Some may laugh but it really is my (realistic) dream car, but it doesn't look like I'm ever going to afford one thanks to Labour, the Saudi's and the Middle East :(

Actually it's nothing to do with the Middle East, they are producing oil as quickly as they can.

The current cost of fuel is a result of greed in two distinct camps, the Government and Oil Futures speculators.

Go petition 10 Downing Street ;)

Riiiiight.

So, you have best part of £20,000 to spend on a car.

Yet, you can't stump up the extra 20% pump price on a litre of unleaded and an extra £200 on the tax?

Were you planning on eating bread and water for the duration of you owning this car?

Change your dream or factor in the running costs into your budget and see if you can realistically afford it.

There was a guy on here recently that bought my current 'dream' car which is a Saab 9-5 Aero. (I currently drive a Vx Corsa 1.7 dti :o) I wanted to know what it was like to own a couple of months down the line and if it was a case of refilling every few days, new tyres every 8k and high service costs and then I would be able to see if it's worth it vs the grin factor (if that happened) every time I drove it.

Unless he's a fastidious saver, I'd imagine he would finance the cost...

Quite.

So, what's wrong with lowering the purchase price a little to soak up the inflated running costs?

In fact, market forces have probably already lowered the purchase price (2nd hand) for him!

Sounds to me like you're looking to us to give you reasons to buy.

I also want an ST, but I won't be getting mine for a few years. It's not that I can't afford one, it's that I can't get insured :)

Seriously, you know you can make it work. the mpg isn't so bad, and tax is a small hit compared to the price of the car.

jeez! if you're that desperate find someone who works for ford and they can give you £1k off of whatever price you agree with the dealer!

Sounds like a lucky escape, its not the sort of car for somebody who will have a fit over paying an extra 200 quid a year for tax.

Never been a better time to buy one if you get it second hand tbh, loads of bargains to be had and dealers are gagging to get rid of them at the moment.

If you've always wanted one then get a good 2 year old car, get it dreamscienced and just enjoy it. Increased running costs can be offset by the lower initial purchase price and you're getting a great car for the money, you only live once !

wow, the miserly ocuk car accountants are a bit quick to savage today...

The chap said he would be buying second hand. ST170's start at just over 4k on autotrader now, quite different to someone spending 20k on a car - at the end of the day the focus ST is a hot hatch not an executive 6 pot... I think its fairly reasonable that the increase in road tax and fuel costs would prevent someone buying a 4k hot hatch that they would other wise have been able to afford ?
