MK1 Golf GTi

its to do with the condition of the engine and the like though not the interior trim etc.

Well no, it's to do with the entire car. An engine can be easily replaced, the entire car cannot. But thanks for asking - thats fine as well, and still kicks out the same power it did when it rolled off the production line. Which you'd expect really becuase sitting at 2000rpm for long periods of time isn't exactly is stressful as doing 10 minute journeys.

Infact in the first year of owning my car I did 3 times as many miles as I've done this year, yet I bet this year I've put more wear on my car than I did in the first year. Why? Becuase 5 mile trips from cold damage an engine more than 100 mile trips up the M5.

I appreciate what you say and agree it can be the right choice for certain people in certain situations, but for someone like me who changes there car every couple of years, the hassle of selling on is too great a factor. I'm also a bit of a poser and one of the first questions people always ask me when I get a new car is "how many miles", at which point I enjoy quoting low mileage. It's one of the many things I enjoy about getting new cars, but everyone is different.

I saved about 5-6 grand off showroom price getting a car under 2 years old with under 15k on the clock, that's the type of buys that interest me, below average miles and a great saving.

Very low mileage is also not great for cars of a certain age, for the reason you stated of short journeys being extremely bad for the engine and various other components. I've bought a car before that spent its whole life in Nottingham city centre, the paintwork was TERRIBLE before I dealt with it and it burned oil like there's no tomorrow, which took about 1000 miles to sort itself out. It had also taken its toll on the clutch and gearbox but I sold it on before that had to be dealt with.

What car do you have?

VW Golf GTI mk5 I think.

I really can't force myself to like the back end of the Mk5s... it looks like the designers hit the smooth mesh button about 50 times too many :(

As for mileage - the sheep behaviour means that it's easier to sell something on with low miles?

Ironically, I'd have thought that higher miles can be a bonus sometimes; surely any common mechanical wear and tear problems are more likely to have reared their heads and been sorted within it's lifetime?

it's actually a polo gti, but far from standard. the young ladies like it so that's the main posing objective covered, also has around 200bhp/tonne so can shoot down any wannabe race driver lower-middle management chumps on the motorway.

It'll be better once I get some R range trim and an R badge on the back though, awesome

And you are telling us what to buy? I hate to sound so rude but i cant help but laugh.

I'm not telling anyone what to buy, I don't "tell" anyone anything, people can make their own minds up. Do you think owning a 2 tonne old merc made to look like an AMG gives you the right to tell people what to buy like?

You called people daft for buying a certain type of car, not really fair is it when they will have made up their mind and bought the most suitable vehicle for the task (as i have done) and maximised their money by getting something a bit miley. Mileage isnt a bad thing.

You have to taking the mick, right? Seriously?

Surely any kudos you get from 'quoting a low mileage' is cancelled out by the fact the car is... a VW Polo? You could have had a higher mileage Audi A4 2.0T Quattro S-Line for the same money...

People take impressing girls with cars WAY too seriously. Unless the girl is into cars, they judge a car based on how shiney it is and how nice it is inside. Girls generally know nothing about car value or mileage. I often drive cars which are almost new so my opinion is not one of somebody whose judgement is clouded by never having driven anything 'low mileage'. Quite the opposite, infact.

I bet if you drove your car to pick a girl up and then the next day borrowed Jez's 100,000 mile Mercedes Benz S Class she'd think the S Class was considerably more expensive.

Can I ask how you can afford a nearly new current shape Polo GTI whilst at Uni? I know that sounds a bit odd coming from somebody of the same age running a 5 Series but... I think yours was probably a tad more expensive?

Did you have some form of financial assistance? Perhaps if the money spent on a car is not all yours or perhaps its a just a monthly payment it might change your priorities, but when you hand over a big wadge of cash for a car it's nice to get as much car for the money as possible.

I am currently driving a 2008 3 Series Touring with 800 miles on the clock, you'd absolutely love it, and its a nice car but... I cannot help preffering mine in every single way. Well, except for liking the 700 mile tank range.

BACK ON TOPIC...

digitalwolf - out of interest, how much mechanical ability do you have?

The thing that I've found with owning older cars is that actually fixing the problem isn't the hard thing, its diagnosing the problem that's the hard work. My car had an idle issue, i went from cleaning the throttle body out to swapping the AFM, turns out that the problem was a split hose coming off the SAD.

I would suggest doing a lot of research - find out about common issues and their solutions, even more modern fixes that remove the issue. There's masses of information on the internet about these cars. Living with them day to day isn't an issue, as you've said it'd be a second/project car.

When they're running well, old hot hatches are great fun, worth every penny IMO.

What's wrong with the 5 series now? :p

Nothing at all, it's safely tucked away in the garage whilst I use this, Z4 has gone in for some paintwork issues to be sorted thats all. As it isn't warranty stuff the supplying dealer had to sort it which meant a 400 mile round trip and thus they gave me an economical loan car. Parents on holiday so I got 'lumbered' (oh its such a chore..) with sorting it :)

If you want to be like [TW]Fox and just another clone then get a BMW/Ford.

If you want to be individual then get the MK1 GTi.

BMW's are over rated. They are more commen than Vectra's these days.

far from it, I love owning a car that there are hardly any of on the road (as it is hideously overpriced out the showroom) and all my friends love it, especially when they come for a drive in it.

I don't want an A4, I like hot hatches. I'll get a larger car when I need one, i.e. have family. The A4 is also slower and less fun.

I'm not at uni, I graduated over a year ago. I'm an IT consultant currently working at Shell, so the monthly payments aren't an issue. I could've paid it all but, as mentioned in another thread a while back, having the money in ISA's is making more interest than I am paying out on interest, so it wouldn't have made financial sense to pay it all off. It also means I have plenty of extra cash to spend making it how I like, i.e. euro look. I'm not interested in off the shelf motors at all, I doubt I'll ever own one unless it's some sort of supercar.

ah right, I'll get that updated one of these days.

the dealership I got my car from knocked a couple of percent off their interest rate as part of the deal, never even asked for it so was pleasantly surprised when he came out with it :D
