4870x2 prices are starting to appear on some EU retail websites according to fudzilla - I checked it out and some retailers in Austria and Germany are listing Sapphire's version at around 315-325 quid. What's the betting the prices are going to be somewhat steeper for us Brits? lol

Ah well, we'll find out in 2-3 weeks I guess :)

That's up to us customer's really loadsa though if we buy them at the inflated price when we know damn well they don't need to be that much we're the fools and deserve to be royally ripped off.

ATI have sent shock waves for bringing out 2 poerfull GFX cards at very low (relatively) prices, would it serve them if the X2 was particularly expensive. 300 quid would realy kick the 280 into touch.

In light of what happened with price drops on 4850/4870 at launch then maybe it's best to wait til they've been out 3+ wks anyway

I really hope UK pricing is similar... I did plan on getting this card when it arrived but if it's too much over that I won't be getting it anytime soon :(

If it is £300 on release, I'll buy it to replace my 4870. If not, I can wait, probably until the £240 - £250 mark before upgrading.

Quick question.

If there is a lot of gouging when the 4870x2 launches, if i buy a 4850 to tide me over, if i then get a 4870x2 can i use the 4850 with it in crossfire? Or would it be pointless?

Thanks

Pretty sure you can crossfire them yeah. If your PSU can handle it all and your running at a worthwhile res (1900x1200+) then yeah.

It would add a little but how much is debatable. The 4870x2 is so powerful anyway.

Eg if you were getting 100fps in a game with 4870x2 and added a 4850 in xfire and got 110fps would you notice and would it be worth the hassle of a xfire setup, extra heat, more power?

tbh I'd get a 4850 now to tide over and then sell it later.

Bit pointless trying to assess on 100fps. If you were running something at 20fps and the 4850 broght it up to 25fps then you would notice - although I'm not convinced it would add that much.

What I'm not clear on is how different memory sizes on the card will effect the crossfire performance.

But for goodness sake man - can't you wait a week?!

And you would also bring your gfx ram down to 512mb per GPU unless you get the 1GB 4850.

Very good point but I am sure I read somewhere that xfire only works with the same size memory and does not work with different sized memories to you might not be able to xfire your 4850 with your 4870x2 anyway.

His point is the price gouging. look at the 4850 and 4870 prices now compared to launch day. He will be waiting another 3 weeks on top of the one week, waiting for prices to drop and settle.

Hence 4 weeks is a long time to wait.
