Whats going on! is the 4870 that good?

lol. Don't you children ever stop bickering! I would have thought both the 280 and the 4870 are excellent cards. Buy whichever floats your boat and the one you can afford, you wont be disappointed in either.

the 4870 would be super inprovement on your 7950gx2 and it is a singe card. take it this way its better then gt260. and it is better in some games then gt280 but in other games wins by few fps but hey its shorter cheaper and has more features.

edit: i dont think u can use B*tch word here ;)

The 4870 is a great card but what would the improvements be over the 7950X2.

So long as your minimum FPS is above 20 you wouldn't see stutter and every game will look just as nice.

It's ok to say 50% jump for some but if that relates in a rise from 40 to 80 FPS for me that wouldn't be worth the upgrade as you won't SEE any difference.

However, my 7600GT was getting <20 FPS in COD4 with most options off at 1400*990 and the fan would be going like a jet engine on the card. The 4870 I get 91 FPS with everything on and 4XAA with very little spiking mimimum framerate hasn't dropped below 55 FPS. But it's the noise of the card that is brilliant. The card doesn't even ramp up after 2 hours solid COD4 gaming. (Although temps of 87°C are worrying hehe)

Why do people fold with their gfx cards? What a waste of money and electricity.

Well i'm gonna assume that you're asking specifically about the folding capability of graphics cards, and not folding in itself, cause anyone who has ever had someone they loved die because of the diseases folding@home are aimed at curing would have no doubts that it's a great project. As for the GPU's they do a lot more calculations per watt and are incredibly easy to add to an existing folding rig, i've been running folding on 4 GPU's for 3 months now and while i am gonna have to stop now because the parent's are complaining about the electricity bill, even with me offering to pay for it. I have ordered a 4870 for this reason, had i still had a chance to use it to fold i would have gotten a 280, simple as that.

I'll just let supercomputers stick to tasks like folding, my desktop PC was never designed for folding, folding could proberbly cure stuff that nearly killed my mum, killed my gran and nearly did to other family members but that aint going to justify folding to me.

I wasn't aware that gpu's could now do that type of folding, I thought it was just some e-peen thing for people with high-end cards. Fair enough then.

The 4870 competes with a GTX260 and is more or less level in most games. However because of its price it is the better buy. However, it simply can't compete with a GTX280 - especially at higher resolutions. I have recently reviewed all 3 in single card aswell as crossfire and SLI configurations;).

Well get reviewing the X2 4870 as that's what I'm interested in :p. 1920x1200 and below the single 4870 is fine though?.
