UK Bin Crimes To Carry Heavier Penalty Than Theft

If bin men are only doing 50% of the collections they did before, have 50% of the workforce been laid off or is it just an easier job now?

No surprise to me this. There is really no limit that this government can reach. Twisted, useless, obsessed with spying on it's own people and trying desperately to control every last aspect of our personal lives - eg what we can/can't eat, what we can/can't recycle, how much we can drink, how much we can smoke etc. The list goes on.

When it comes to the environment this country is now a complete farce. They know full well that people will just dump the waste in fields and other such places. It wouldn't be so bad if we could still go to the incinerator ourselves and just dump a vanload of our junk and waste in, but no, incineration is "evil to the planet" and will not be tolerated. Global warming and all that. What they neglect to mention is that global warming exists whether we like it or not. There is nothing we can do to change it. This planet has been through loads of ice ages over the billions of years it has been here, and there will probably be more somewhere down the line. I really doubt that humans are single handedly responsible for the planet's temprature.

Anyway I digress. Householders are an easy target, even easier than motorists as it appears. Real criminals are too hard to catch nowadays so councils just implement these pathetic hand-wringing "policies" and "inititives". All just more tax for them. If there was no way of them getting money out of it then they really would not give a ****.

Rant over. And no, I do not read the Daily Mail so please no ridiculous comments saying I should stop reading it.

Well, given that whoever wrote the article doesn't even know that Hillary Benn is a man, I think it's reasonable to question the accuracy of that fine organ.

Given that the article makes no mention of hillary's sex be it male or female

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has backed on-the-spot fines of up to £110 for those who overfill their bins, leave them out too early, or put out extra sacks of rubbish alongside them.

I doubt whether you actually read it at all ;)

Last time i checked, i think there were about 50 scientific institutes which all agreed that climate change was occuring due to human influences. I would like to know why you "really doubt humans are single handedly responsible" for climate change - i'm assuming you must have written a paper on this or been involved in some kind of research to make such a bold statement?

Humans are changing the world's climate and even the most ignorant of people are starting to believe it.

Anyway, back to the fines - they are ridiculous. I think i read that the guy in charge wanted to implement the fine just as a deterrent, but £110 is a bloody huge "deterrent". Surely a £20 fine would have a much similar affect to the £110 fine. I just couldn't believe thieves and drunken idiots were getting off with £80 fines, yet *draws in breath" leaving your bin lin open by a couple of inches results in a nice £110 fine.

Should be shot tbh

£120 is ridiculous but at £20 a fine the council will not make any money and this not worth enforcing, however up the fine to £120 the council now takes notice and starts to employe 'bin police'.

No they agree that humans are speeding it up not causing it.

Best all the green crap can do is slow it down, so we waste money making it some future generations problem as opposed to building defenses for when it does :/

Exactly, couldn't have said this any better myself.

Collection in Oxford isn't so bad, but Bristol is dire.

Last year I put out the recycling out and they didn't take it because a can had blown off the top of the open top bin to the floor.

The next week, they refused to take the cans in tied up plastic bags AND the tins neatly stacked in the recycling bin, out of spite I guess.

I was also told by the binmen they wouldnt take boxes filled with glass and tin, even though on the side it says quite clearly 'for glass and tin'.

Now its one collection every two weeks. What a joke!

My bin situation is a minefield.

I have a black wheelie bin collected fortnightly that will not be taken if the lid won't shut

On the alternate weeks they collect all this crap:

I have a brown wheelie bin for garden waste

I have a red box for cans, glass, and plastic bottles

I have a yellow bag for cardboard

I have a blue bag for something else (paper? can't remember)

The binmen NEVER take the tin lids, they are always laying in the gutter all down the street, they never put the lids back on the boxes so they get blown down the street. The same fate befalls the yellow bag and the blue bag.

It's one of the things that makes me wish I lived in Carmarthenshire, where I could fill as many black sacks as I liked with whatever I liked and throw them out every Thursday.

Having been slighted by lazy scumbag dustbin men before (I am sure some of you will remember the thread I made about it some time ago), this is a horrible piece of legislation to make. So now if the dustbin men doesn't do their jobs (and they haven't done on several occasions), and I have to deal with an overflow of crap, I get treated worse than a thief.

Two fingers up to the piece of rot who came up with the idea.

Labour like to spend a quid to save 50p lol

Round my area not only do they not take your wheelie bin if lid is not 100% down (i mean neighbours was left as it was 1cm up (yes we measured it)) they refuse to take them if they are too heavy, Weird though as you pull/push them and they weigh next to nowt even filled with water, And there's no lifting as the hydraulics do this lol

Yep another stealth tax from good old labour :D (actually not too stealthy they are slipping)

And as for this ecology/green stuff, Without the USA then China going completely green there's no chance of stopping any global problems :(

Being green/ecologically conscious these days just means someone gets richer by you being forced to do stuff

Germany if they still do it, when you recycle there you get rates reduction from the council (german equiv) so as you get greener/more eco-friendly you get a benefit

What have we here ??? Hmm new laws to fine (hmm where's that end up, ohh yeah the government) and no benefit or lower council taxes etc

But did you know, when you now go and take rubbish to a tip and you sort it etc, The council (my council let a southern authority recycle ;)) then get paid for the recycled goodies (nice council ethics ehh)

God bless blightey and the overtaxtion system lol

ps: imho too many politicians overdid the old lsd in the 60's

What if every household revolted against this surely they couldn't fine every single household.

Also what about a reduction in CT because thats where a percentage of your money goes.

I applaud this. Once I drove down a street and somebody had placed a bin out early. It was harrowing and had a real effect on me. More so than shoplifting.

Now, this isn't a dig so please dont take it as one... I really cant tell how serious you are there... but I'm on copious amounts of painkillers at the moment.

Anyway, along my road, there's three houses that tend to put their bins out five days early... which makes no sense at all to me, there's no way in hell they can create that much rubbish in the two days after collection, then none again until its been collected the following week...
They all put their rubbish out on the corner of the street, and needless to say, two days later cats/dogs/one weird old lady have ripped all the bags open and strewn the refuse all over the road.
I'm all for fining them, but as has been said elsewhere, its unfair to fine people for producing so much rubbish when the facilities for recycling are so substandard.

no ones ever said anything to us about it to be fair
You're in the majority, but lucky nonetheless. Some areas are anal about it - to the point that even if the lid is ajar by one inch they'll refuse to empty the bin. Not sure what our area is like now as they've recently changed contractors. Time will tell.

Fines are rare, but they have been imposed on 'repeat offenders'.

I have no problem with at least reprimanding those who leave their bins in the middle of the pavement for days on end. Yes, I know there are some areas where there is no room to do anything else, but otherwise there are very few excuses. Getting anal about the lid being ajar by an inch is ridiculous, however. :/

PS - refusing to empty bins that are too heavy is with good reason. All the modern bins are plastic and the hydraulics lift the bins by their edges. If that snaps the bin either falls in the collection vehicle or falls on the binmen. Neither is a good idea. It's surprising how easy it is for these plastics to snap. I've had it happen at least twice, and my bin was empty when it happened.
