MK1 Golf GTi

BACK ON TOPIC...

digitalwolf - out of interest, how much mechanical ability do you have?

The thing that I've found with owning older cars is that actually fixing the problem isn't the hard thing, its diagnosing the problem that's the hard work. My car had an idle issue, i went from cleaning the throttle body out to swapping the AFM, turns out that the problem was a split hose coming off the SAD.

I would suggest doing a lot of research - find out about common issues and their solutions, even more modern fixes that remove the issue. There's masses of information on the internet about these cars. Living with them day to day isn't an issue, as you've said it'd be a second/project car.

When they're running well, old hot hatches are great fun, worth every penny IMO.

My mechanical abillity is very limited.

I can service, change exhaust systems, brake pads and discs but thats about it.

The Golf mainly lets you down with it's gearbox. Can be problematic.

A friend of mine has a Mk1 with the same conversion.

Always went very well.

Having a chat with a retro car fan at work today, he has a Mk1 and Mk2 Escort and he said go for it.

He reckons i'm highly unlikely to lose money on one.......they are as rare as rocking horse ****

To spend that much on one, my Saxo would have to go.

1.8 16v = 160bhp :D

it's also a great car to improve your mechanical knowledge, none of the electronic pish and bespoke fittings that make modern cars a total pain to work on

personally I'd go for one with the original engine and keep it pretty much standard with a few OEM+ mods :D I've never been in one with a powerful engine put in so am not sure how they cope with it

My mate has the 1.8i. It should run on leaded fuel, unleaded is okay, but not even LRP is available around here anymore.

Surely this is a problem?

This is a mate's car, started off as a very clean 1.3, is now being prepped for an AMD tuned 1.8 valver!

and it's current state :)

This was a really clean example that had next to no rot, they are still out there but tend to be non gti's as they are usually £££'s for clean ones.

It's the wrong one lol. There is one very similar in Birmingham.

How similar? is it just that it's a mk1 golf and you stuck up a random pics of a modded mk1?
or does it also come with a vr6 conversion, 15" splitrims, early bumpers, custom body & paint and loads of other bits?

There's no way a car looking like that with those sort of parts will ever go for £400 when tatty cars go for £1500+

I'm also a bit of a poser and one of the first questions people always ask me when I get a new car is "how many miles", at which point I enjoy quoting low mileage. It's one of the many things I enjoy about getting new cars, but everyone is different.
It's much better when they ask how much and their face drops when you tell them you saved a stupid amount of money because someone decided to use it for motorway miles rather than around town.

I bought a 4 year old 530d last year for £10500. It had 84k and 1 company director owner. It is immaculate.
I saved about 5-6 grand off showroom price getting a car under 2 years old with under 15k on the clock, that's the type of buys that interest me, below average miles and a great saving.
By your logic then, I saved £25000 off the show room price.

I didnt look at the spec of the car, all I know was it had a very similar paint job and the same wheels.

Shame the chassis was like a cullinder.
