Hi guys:) im looking for a compact up to £200 to take out and about when the SLR isnt an option. i dont really care about the size of the screen or anything like that, it's all about the picture quality. good battery life and performance with the flash is also at the top of the list.

whats the best i can get for my money then? :) i might be swayed to spend a little more if the difference is worth it.

Do a search, there are about 6 million threads, no exageration, on this subject.

thanks. thats no help at all.

If you compare to a DSLR with a proper flash, the flash performance of any compact is *****.

thanks, i do realise this, but some compacts are still better than others arent they? i wanted to know what was the best for my money, the opinions of one person on one camera doesnt really help me, i wanted to here from people with more experiance. thank you though, alex:)

i wonder if the other 5,999,998 threads will tell me eh chronic?

anybody else with any advice, or better stil experiance? it takes a bloody long time to search on here for me atm, what with having to put up with dialup till the 15th and all.

I've moved away from the compact for a few months now - DSLR all the way, so not sure what better ones are available to you but I loved my Fuji F30. The "newer" brother F31FD is similar but with Face Detection.

No IS, which may be a downside - Canon Ixus have them.

Anyway, for the Fuji F30, battery life is top notch, picture is sharp in both day and night - but in my opinion, I don't like flash. So I can't really comment on the flash on the F30. I hardly use it unless in Auto or really really have to or I'll get blurred images.

Have a look around there. 500 shots in 1 full charge is a great plus!

Others may say go for the Canon G9 or G7, for it's similarity to the DSLR, RAW support and very good image quality - but price is over your budget.

thank you guys, i do like the look of the tz5. ive read a couple of reviews that have commented on the disappointing noise at any iso levels, have you guys noticed or had problems with this? it looks great otherwise, though apparently no manual controls? thats a bit of a shame but not the end of the world.

I'm reading up on it now...that's a bit weird. I'm kind of used to flicking a button if I'm in snow...and whatnot.

james.miller what camera did you decide on in the end?

I am in the same position and need a compact camera < £150 (though I could stretch a bit) for when I can't be bothered to take the SLR out. It will mainly be used when out in the evening so I don't have to lug round my large camera bag for my SLR. The panny tz5 looks alright but it dosnt look that compact. Ideally I want one which when turned off has a flush lens and has a good (for a compact) flash.

Are the Nikon Coolpix any good? The only reason being is that I've seen a few majorly discounted, which are obviously old stock, but they seem like a bargain at the moment? I want something a bit more compact that the Panasonic, and cheaper too!

Coincidence but I'm repairing a PC for a bloke and he's just come round asking me to show him how to use his new camera he had this morning.
Its a Sony Cyber-Shot S730 7.2MP for £80 from a big store and its obviously a cut down model of mine.
Mine has got a very wide lens on it (in fact I took 20 steps away from the Great Pyramid and got it all in) but this cheaper version isn't as wide.
Its just as quick at turning on and being ready, got loads of features AND you can use normal AAs in it which you can't in mine.
I don't think mine is worth £120 more than this cheaper model to be honest.
Ho hum.
